The car service picked us up at the boat, and that was a great start to our getaway. The Jared Coffin House is right in town, with shopping and dining everywhere and just minutes away. Room #201 was large and clean, with a super-comfortable bed; the bathroom was roomy and well laid out too. The sink vanity was a little small, so we had to store toiletries in the cabinet below. A table or extra storage under the window would help. Breakfast was substantial, and having places to sit in both buildings was a real plus. We did hear garbage trucks early in the morning, but don’t let that put you off booking. Everyone we met at the hotel was warm and helpful, especially Omelia, who helped us book. It was just about perfect, and I only wish we could’ve stayed longer.

We were there for a week, and I loved every minute. The staff were always polite, helpful, and respectful, and our room was cleaned every day. The beds were really comfortable, and the breakfast was good too, with pastries, muffins, cereal, oatmeal, and yogurt. I’ve seen complaints about the noise, but you can hear other people because it’s a very old building. We’ll always be grateful for our stay. This was the most amazing place I’ve ever stayed.

We were given a ride back to the ferry terminal, which was a plus. The Jared Coffin is a historic building in a central spot for shops and restaurants, about an eight-minute walk from the ferry. We had high hopes, but left disappointed. I’d choose a traditional B&B, like I have on other Nantucket trips. Booking on the Jared Coffin website sent me to a third-party site without any notice. That company also answered the phone, and the confirmation came from an unnamed reservation company, not Jared Coffin. It didn’t match the room I thought I’d booked, though the representative assured me it was the same. When we raised the issue on site, they moved us to a slightly bigger room, but the front desk insisted they couldn’t do anything because we’d used a “third party.” We had booked directly from the Jared Coffin website. The room felt dated, not renovated. The bathroom was downright strange, with a sink hidden down a long inner hallway. My husband couldn’t find it at first. Breakfast was an okay, nothing-special continental spread with no hot food, eaten on your lap in one of two parlors. Since the hotel advertises a restaurant, I don’t understand why breakfast couldn’t be served there.

I’ve stayed here a dozen times and have never had a bad experience. Room sizes vary, but housekeeping and the front desk staff are always five-star, and the location can’t be beat. Highly recommend.

Avoid room 102. It’s beside the restaurant’s waiter station, where plates and utensils are dumped into bins, so lunch from noon to 3 and dinner from 5 to 10 meant constant clattering. Power gardening also started at 6:45 a.m. and ran until 7:30, so there was noise all day. I’d stayed here several times before, but never again. I suspect nearby rooms have similar noise problems. Zero stars.
