The room turned out to be clean and had good amenities, and the staff were friendly and helpful. But our first impression was poor. We arrived about an hour before check-in in early August 2017, found the room wasn't ready, and waited in the lobby. The chairs near the coffee area were badly worn, and both they and the rug were very dirty. Given the hotel's rating and the comments we'd read, we wondered what the room would be like. I'd suggest replacing those chairs with ones that are easier to keep clean, and either deep-cleaning the rug more often or removing it. A dirty lobby makes a strong impression, and that area didn't reflect the rest of the hotel.

Angel at the front desk was wonderful, and we'll definitely be back. We booked on the drive up from Jersey during an impromptu NYC visit because the rates and reviews looked good. There was no ridiculous $50 security fee. They offer valet parking, but we found a street spot. The room was cute, with a nice bed, clean floors and bathroom, and a cute minibar. I didn't find it small, despite reviews saying that. It was clean and modern, and super close to Times Square. It's not luxury, so don't expect things like a touchscreen shower or marble floors.

Ashantay at the front desk was kind and helpful, and the doorman remembered my name after lunch and offered to bring up my luggage. I said I had some work to finish first, and the library was a lovely place to do it. The bed was very comfortable, the shower was great, and the coffee was very good. I couldn't get the lights by the bed to turn on, though I'm sure staff could have sorted it out if needed. Best hotel I've ever stayed at.

I ended up spending 15 days at Hotel Chandler while doing a two-week intensive program, and it really felt like my home base in NYC. The rooms are small, but I got used to the space. The bed was comfy, the room clean, and the shower was great. I loved seeing the staff every day and getting to say good morning or good evening. Free coffee and tea helped a lot with those early starts, and the chocolates and turndown service were amazing. The elevators were a little slow, which is my only real criticism. I'm going back this month and can't wait to see everyone!
