Hampton Inn Madison Square Garden Area Hotel

The location is great, and the staff seemed to be doing their best, but the rooms need attention. Our first room was unreasonably warm, with the A/C wall panel completely off and no controls on the unit itself. They moved us to the only other available room. The A/C worked there and made it cold, but the panel still didn't control it. We spent the rest of the stay dealing with a room at 64-65 degrees. If room temperature doesn't matter to you, the hotel is great.

We were a family of four and found this a good base for enjoying NYC. The location is excellent, with a couple of subway stops nearby and Times Square within walking distance. The rooms are small, but well kept, and snacks were replenished often. For a budget hotel, it had what we needed to be comfortable overnight. Breakfast had a good range, and the boys especially liked the waffles. Staff were helpful too. We reported a problem with our door as we went out one morning, and it was fixed by the time we got back.

Whenever we come to NYC, this is our preferred hotel. The price and location work well, the service is excellent, and the rooms are clean and a good size by city standards. Breakfast was good each morning, and the adults and small child in our group all enjoyed the stay. The double beds are the one drawback. They're quite small, so sharing one with another adult can feel cramped. If you're arriving at Penn Station on Amtrak, this is an easy hotel to walk to.

UPDATE: Be careful. I suspect the cleaning staff take the water left in the room after checkout and then charge guests for it. The hotel is very close to Penn Station, and we could walk there with big luggage. Breakfast was decent and included, and the staff were nice. On checkout day we left our bags with the hotel so we could enjoy one last visit to the city, then came back to collect them. We stayed on the 10th floor and heard street noise. There's a Fire Station practically next door, so expect sirens through the night.
