Hotel Lynx

I don't write reviews often. Usually it's because I'm either impressed or really disappointed, and here I was disappointed before I even got the chance to be impressed. On the day I was due to arrive, a third party emailed to say Hotel Luxe NY couldn't honor my reservation for my planned dates. I'd read about someone else having this happen, though I think they only learned about it after reaching the hotel. I had called the hotel the day before to confirm, and the desk attendant had told me I was “all set.” So much for the reservation. My travel plans have been seriously affected. They didn't explain why they couldn't honor a reservation they'd already confirmed. It was Halloween weekend, and I'm sure plenty of people were coming to NY willing to pay more for rooms that had originally been listed at lower prices. Just saying. My stay was in August 2014, and this was probably the worst hotel I've stayed at in most of my 35 years. The room was tiny even by New York standards, and the cable had four channels one day, then 20 the next. The front desk clerk said four channels was standard. The owner, working the evening desk, was sarcastic when we arrived around midnight, which was frustrating. Another clerk didn't know how to use the system and kept asking me to pay for a reservation that was already made and paid for. The walls were paper-thin, and we could hear conversations from rooms away. There's nowhere to store things, so you'll have to leave your clothes in your luggage. No fridge or microwave, either. The place was very clean, and it looks beautiful in the online photos, but it's really an efficiency, more like a motel. I wouldn't recommend it. Don't waste your money or time unless you just need somewhere clean and fairly safe to sleep.

I stayed in one of the best rooms, which was maintenance-free, and felt my belongings had decent security. There's an elevator, too. I saw a famous celebrity who seemed suspicious. The front desk was a little slow.

Carmen was very friendly at the desk, and even though I arrived around 1:30, I was able to check in before the 3:30 time. I was grateful not to have to wander Brooklyn with my luggage. At checkout, I needed a taxi, and the two men at the desk quickly called and arranged one for me, though I ended up not needing it. The room and bathroom were nice and clean, and the pictures were accurate. It met my expectations and then some. The location was okay, right off the very busy Atlantic Avenue. I'm glad someone guided me, or I might not have found it so easily. The view wasn't much, just the backs of somewhat run-down buildings. My main issues were that there was no refrigerator for food, and the elevators were so close to the rooms that loud people getting out or talking in the hall felt like they were right in your room. Still, I'd probably stay again. The price was okay for New York.
