Manhattan View Hotel

The location and the effort from some of the staff are about the only reasons I can give this two stars. It's very cheap for NYC, and there's a reason: the rooms are tiny, the beds are uncomfortable, and the appliances and furniture feel cheap. There's a strange smell throughout the hotel, especially in the underground breakfast area, where the continental breakfast was terrible. The walls already have peeling paint despite the hotel being brand new, and there are holes in the ceiling. There's no parking on site. The nearest lot is more than half a mile away and costs $21 a night. I'd only stay here if I couldn't afford anything else.

The bed was comfortable, the room was clean, and the nearest subway is under a 10-minute walk. Four adults made it work, though it was a very tight fit. The free breakfast is about what you'd expect for free. The ironing board was a mess. The one in the closet had a crooked pedal and a cover that didn't fit. The front desk quickly sent another, but it came without a cover of its own. After struggling to get the old cover on, I gave up and ironed on the foam padding.

The room was spacious and the bed comfortable, and it cost less than staying in Manhattan. The hotel sits among gas stations and garages. You can walk to the metro and Astoria, but it's still a long walk. There was a strange smell in the elevator, and breakfast was a waste of time.

The bathroom looked nearly new, the Wi-Fi worked well, and breakfast was okay, but we won't be staying here again. We were there February 14-16, 2020, and the beds listed online as queen size turned out to be full size. Our sheet had a stain, so we asked for a fresh set. The walls were stained too, and we could hear noise from other rooms. There was no heat in the bathroom. The AC/heater never worked right: one side was cold and the other hot. A maintenance worker told us to wait a few minutes, but that didn't help. Parking was a huge hassle. I had to drive around, then move the car to a pay lot before 8:30 the next morning to avoid having the city tow it. The area felt sketchy, especially imagining arriving at midnight or later and searching for a spot. At 8 a.m. there was also a horrible lawnmower-like sound in the hallway. Maybe there was construction, but that was much too early.
