Robert Treat Hotel

Being close to the theater was convenient, and parking was too, but the room smelled like smoke and the bathroom had a strange odor. My friend and I left the room aired out while we were at the concert, and it smelled okay when we returned. Our next-room neighbor had loud music on. We nearly missed a problem with the car too: the staff accountant seemed a bit lost, and it took about an hour to get my car because the keys to the car blocking it had been misplaced. We checked out just in time.

A good budget choice if you're looking to stay by Newark airport, and I'd come back if I'm in the area again. We paid only 91$ for the night, and there's a free shuttle. The rooms are small, but they were clean and well maintained. There was some noise from the outer lobby in our room.

I'm a Newark native, and both my husband and I graduated from events held at the Robert Treat Hotel. After our two-night stay, though, I won't ever return. The parking costs 24 dollars, the lot is small and cramped with few spaces, the walls are paper thin, the ceilings are peeling, and the hotel smells like weed and cigarettes. Stains on the provided blankets meant we brought our own, and the chair was stained and uncomfortable. The bed was very soft and sank when we sat or lay on it. The desk wouldn't work with a wireless mouse. Our bed wasn't made, towels and washcloths were missing, and the room hadn't been serviced. Worse, somebody had been in our room while we were out. The Do Not Disturb sign was on the door when we left and gone when we returned around 6:30 pm. Nothing valuable was there to take, but my clothes, memorial t-shirt, and toiletries had been handled. For someone to enter our room is outrageous. On top of that, our key didn't work when we got back, the parking attendant was rude and unhelpful, and the desk clerk took 10 to 15 minutes to find our reservation even though I showed him my Expedia confirmation, printed and on my phone. He said I had to pay for an extra night.

I was nervous after reading the reviews, but I'm glad I booked anyway. The hotel itself is beautiful, and the staff were kind and courteous every time we interacted. Our only concern during the week was a stain on the bed, which housekeeping changed quickly after we pointed it out. I'd recommend it if you're looking to stay in Newark or near NYC.
