Holiday Inn Newport News - Hampton by IHG

The well-lit, visible parking lot helped me feel safe about my son and adopted mom staying there while I was at a nearby hospital for surgery. I chose this place because it was easy to get to the hospital, and the staff were helpful. With early winter sunsets and them coming and going, the lighting mattered a lot to me. We plan to come back for a more leisurely visit, and maybe I'll get to join them.

The room and hotel were good, and we didn't use the pool or gym. Breakfast was in the attached burger restaurant. There was a decent selection, but the food quality was poor and it didn't seem fresh. The scrambled eggs were okay. The coffee was weak and there wasn't much of it, the pancake edges were hard, the waffle batter seemed old and separated, and the fruit looked like it might be leftovers from previous days.

I enjoyed the peace and quiet, even with a few young people on my floor. They kept to themselves and seemed to be enjoying their stay too. I was there for a conference and stayed at the host location while my colleagues booked elsewhere. The walk downstairs to the conference center was comfortable, and customer service was outstanding. When I couldn't get into my room, the front desk fixed the problem right away. Staff made me feel comfortable when I asked questions, and the head manager always spoke when we crossed paths. The bathrooms were hard to get to and a bit small, with the conference center directly below the hotel. Still, I can't really complain: the price was worth getting away from my everyday routine, and the points earned per dollar gave me some motivation to return more often.

Ed, who was working the evening desk, was amazing during our weekend away. When I mentioned a minor noise issue, he was quick to help, with a smile and a laugh. Our room was comfortable, clean, and 99% quiet.
