Newport News Inn

There’s traffic noise since it’s on Jefferson Avenue. The room itself was clean, with a comfortable mattress and a nice big Lazy Boy style chair. The heat worked well, and there was a refrigerator and microwave.

I’ve tried a lot of hotels around here, from Hampton to Williamsburg, and Newport News Inn is cleaner than any of them, including the big chains. I haven’t spotted a single ant or roach in the room, which is a first for me. It’s quiet and I feel safe there. The decor’s a little dated and the bed isn’t the comfiest, but I’ll take that over worrying about mold, dirt, or bugs. Chris manages the place and clearly keeps things in order. I’d definitely recommend it.

I’ve stayed here on and off for years, including after I lost my home, because it feels like a home away from home. As someone from this city, I think it compares well with many other hotels around here. There are no bugs in the rooms, even though roaches are common in our city, with ships and port cargo bringing them back and forth. The staff are friendly, the location is nice, and it’s quiet. It’s not fancy, and I don’t understand why it only has one star. Even when rooms elsewhere got much more expensive for an event this weekend, this hotel only charged its usual weekend rate. It deserves a higher rating.

After about three hours in the room, with only one of those spent inside before I told the staff, I saw what looked like bed bugs on a clean sheet, like little moving black dots. When smeared, they looked like ash. The staff member acted as if it was fine, and refused to move me to another room or refund my money.
