The place was cheap that night, only $48 with tax, and surprisingly spacious, with a living room and a bedroom. I shouldn’t have been surprised by the layout since it used to be temporary military housing when I was younger. We’d been drinking on Memorial Day weekend and weren’t going to drive, and every hotel within 15 miles was fully booked. We stumbled onto this one. It wasn’t anything special, and it definitely wasn’t clean. The towels looked used and refolded, the living room furniture was dirty and stained, the tub and toilet seemed not to have been cleaned in days, and the fridge was dirty too. The sheets clearly had been slept in. I didn’t see any roaches or bedbugs, but the dirt and filthy bathroom were bad enough.
Seriously, pay more and stay somewhere clean and safe. This place isn’t worth the money. The room was a nightmare: old McDonald’s left under the bed, stained sheets, loose tiles that nearly made you fall through the floor, and light fixtures that flashed on and off. We piled chairs in front of the door while we slept because the place felt scary, especially at night. Outside, the parking lot was full of stray cats that looked diseased and disgusting. We felt at home with all the critters during our one night, but we had to move on. What a “lovely” stay.
The rooms are huge, almost like small apartments, with a full kitchen area and a separate bedroom. The staff were friendly, and for the money the value was hard to beat. I’d recommend it, but be warned that the hotel is rustic. It needs room renovations, and the internet was terrible, with a weak signal everywhere. Normally, with conditions like these, I’d give a hotel maybe one star, but the room size and price made it worth three.
The fridge was broken the first night, so all the groceries we’d just bought spoiled, including milk for my two-year-old. They said they’d replace it, but it took four days. In the meantime, they told us to move food back and forth between the freezer and fridge. They’d also said they’d comp the room because we lost the food and waited so long. When I brought it up, the manager acted as if I was crazy and offered ten dollars, which didn’t cover the food. There were other serious problems. The beds seemed 30 years old, and ours had such a big dip in the middle that neither my fiancé nor I could sleep. The blanket had mold on the bottom, and I found an old, nasty black thong hanging from the pipes under the bathroom sink. The carpet borders were coming off the walls. An electrical outlet in the bedroom was hanging out with wires exposed while a lamp was plugged in. The rooms are disgusting and outdated, and “rustic” doesn’t begin to describe them. The photos online look about 15 years old. The building’s owners seem to live in a penthouse suite while the rooms are infested with roaches. Five different drug dealers approached me. On another occasion, my boyfriend hit me and left. I went outside to smoke, accidentally locked myself out, and asked the manager for another key so I could get my child and leave. He said no and threatened to call the police. I wasn’t allowed back in to get my two-year-old, who was alone inside with glass on the floor. I asked five times to move to a different room because the middle of the bed touched the floor, but they never let us switch. The rates didn’t seem consistent either. A couple nearby paid $220 a week, we paid $282, and the people on the other side paid $318. It felt like they made up a weekly price based on what they thought each person could afford. I should have taken pictures so everyone could see what this place really looks like. Don’t go unless you’re absolutely desperate.
I have never seen so many bedbugs in my life. Don’t stay at Roadway. It’s disgusting.
