Boston Marriott Newton

The staff were knowledgeable and courteous, and service was excellent at every level. Our rooms were clean and everything worked, with none of the usual hotel smell in the rooms or corridors. There's a resident swan on the river behind the hotel, visible from rooms on our side. The restaurant food was good, though the menu was limited. I had lean boneless beef short ribs in a nice jus sauce, and my wife had exquisite Italian wedding soup and generous, meaty wings. The breakfast bar came with the room rate and was comprehensive enough that I didn't see a need to order the extra priced items. We also enjoyed a very nice, though expensive, Thanksgiving buffet brunch. The Newton Marriott is a large hotel/motel over 50 years old, near routes 128, I-95, and I-90. As of late November 2025, construction at the nearby highway interchange was causing some inconvenience. The architecture is somewhat brutalist. Rooms are adequately renovated, though there's some wear and tear in the corners. They have refrigerators but no microwaves, and the only customer microwave is tucked in a corner on the top floor. The desk chair was comfortable, but the accompanying “lounge” chair, as shown in the photo, wasn't.

The Christmas decorations were all up when I visited on Dec 24, and service was amazingly good despite the major holiday. From room 651, I had a great view of snow falling on the Charles River through a tree. It was a peaceful moment. The beds were top notch, and the room felt quaint and cozy. The shower could've been a little better, though the water pressure was good. Breakfast was pricey but delicious. A+ stay. I'd definitely recommend it and come back.

Brisa at the front desk answered all our questions and showed a genuine interest in making sure we had what we needed. We really appreciate her. Thank you for having such a wonderful person on staff. She's someone I'd want representing my own organization.

The employees were great, but the hotel is showing its age. My room's rug was old and so stained that I wouldn't walk around without shoes on, which felt gross and wasn't what I've come to expect from my Marriott stays. The bathroom door frame also had visible rust, despite the multiple coats of paint they'd used to cover it up. What really cost it stars for me was the hotel bar's blatant greed during the event I attended there. I wanted a plain soda and saw a sign listing sodas at $4. I thought $4 for a 12 oz can was expensive, but I understood prices would be higher with us as a captive audience. Then I found out that the $4 bought only 4 ounces, not the whole can. The bartender poured ginger ale from a can into a 7 oz glass with 3 oz of ice. That's $1 per ounce, or $12 for a 12 oz can. To make it worse, they had a tip jar out. They were ripping us off blind and still expected a tip? Beer was $10 a bottle, so $5 more would buy a whole 12-pack in my town. I understand that companies think it's okay to scalp and radically overcharge captive audiences for food and drinks, but the Boston Marriott Newton actually charges more for soda than beer: $12 for a 12oz can of ginger ale, $10 for a 12oz bottle of Ultra. When was the last time you paid more for a soda than a beer? This is not okay, Marriott.
