Extended Stay America Suites - Oakland - Emeryville

I booked online, but never even spent the night. At the front desk, all the cash and cards were taken from my wallet. My ID, insurance card, and EBT card were still there. The woman said there were no cameras and refused, even though one was rolling right in front of the lobby. I'd stayed once before, and the place wasn't very clean then either, with roaches around. After this, I probably won't try another extended stay. I went to doubletree in Berkeley instead, and it was much cleaner and more professional.

The bedding had bedbugs, and the linens were stained. I could also see dirt on the surfaces, and the room smelled strongly musty, like it hadn't been cleaned or looked after in a long time. When I told the staff, they didn't seem concerned or quick to deal with it. A stay should at least be clean and comfortable, and this fell well short. I wouldn't recommend this hotel until the hygiene and pest problems are addressed.

The location works well for me, and staff have been great. The rooms have good facilities, and secure parking matters in this area. Still, both stays have been disappointing enough that I don't think I'll come back. On my first visit the TV didn't work, and bugs came out from the wall under the bathroom floorboard and crawled across the floor. This time I chose a first-floor room, but after six days it still smelled like fried fish, even though I hadn't cooked there. I didn't ask to move because I thought the odor might fade. The toilet also keeps running, probably because the cistern seal is worn out, though I haven't reported it yet. There were no pots or pans when I checked in. It functions, but for what I've paid, it hasn't been worth it.

The staff were friendly and I got a good deal, but room 431 was filthy and had roaches. There was personal lubricant left in a drawer, too. This felt neglected, not just dusty, and needs a thorough cleaning and serious roach treatment. I've heard the Fremont location is very clean, but our room wasn't. The neighborhood also has lots of rats that don't seem afraid of people, almost like they might rob you. My dog nearly caught one as big as she was. Just a heads-up.
