The balcony was a highlight. We spent two days there and saw deer, raccoons, sea otters, and a gray whale. It’s also hard to beat the location: after a few hours exploring downtown Port Townsend, our room was close when we wanted a break or needed to drop something off. The wood and brick are beautiful, and we had fun reading a few notes and wishes previous guests had left in the brick wall before putting them back. The bed is very soft, the ceiling is high, and the loft would be great for a kid. We loved opening the tall glass doors and listening to the waves. Check-in by text was simple, and there are little umbrellas by the front door to borrow. There were some downsides. If you won’t spend much time in the room or downtown, the price may be hard to justify. The walls are thin: the first night our neighbors came in at 2 a.m. in a very merry mood and made sure everyone knew it. Luckily, we were alone the second day and night. The shared hallway and sunroom connect all four units; the historic photos are nice, but the space feels a bit stuffy. The balcony is shared with the neighboring unit, with only a small movable wooden divider. The website mentions free parking for one vehicle, but that means a park-and-ride about a mile away with a shuttle. There’s plenty of street parking nearby, fortunately. The robes are a nice touch, but too small if you’re above a medium. It was still a fantastic, memorable getaway, and we’ll be back.
After the February 2025 remodel, check-in was awful. The codes were wrong, and we spent 40 minutes on hold to get a new one for the building. That didn’t work for the room door either, so we waited another 30 minutes for help from a Philippines help desk. There was no one on site. The door codes they gave us stopped working after the first use, again with nobody there to help. The room was 61 degrees when we arrived. The walls are paper thin, and the balcony is shared with the room next door. We had a six-month-old infant with us. At $400 a night, we expected substantially better. Never again, not even for a quarter of that price. They also said there was parking but gave no details about where or how.
I’ve stayed at four hotels in PT, and this one ranks third out of the four for me. I liked not having to interact with anyone at check-in, and the bottled water and orange juice were appreciated. But the parking was the worst of those hotels: there’s no dedicated lot, so how far you carry your luggage seems to depend on the parking gods. When I booked, I asked whether extra pillows and a fan might be available. They never said they couldn’t meet those requests, so I could have brought my own. There were no extra pillows when I arrived. I made do the first night and asked again the next day, only to hear, “sorry we don’t have extra pillows.” It’s a very small hotel, so how can there be no spares, and why not say so ahead of time? The complimentary muffins look like the new Costco recipe, which is famously not tasty, so they’re not much of a perk. Just stay at Palace Hotel instead.
The room was ready for us with everything we needed, and self check-in was easy. We especially liked having a sunny, quiet deck off our waterfront room for morning coffee. The hotel is small and right in central Port Townsend, so we could walk to shops, restaurants, and the Saturday Farmers Market. We’d happily come back when we’re in PT. It was renovated in 2018, so older reviews, especially those mentioning the restaurant that has since closed, don’t describe the current stay.
We stayed here twice, at the start and end of our trip, and still never got working front door codes. Each time we had to go through a long, frustrating process just to get inside. The codes sent ahead for the building and room didn’t work, so we stood in the wind and rain calling and texting before eventually getting a physical key from a lockbox. Getting into the room meant going through the same ordeal again. They even tried incorrect codes and gave us the combination for a box with someone else’s key. The company managing the rooms is out of state, and didn’t seem to have basic check-in information organized, even though guests must ask these questions repeatedly. After the first stay, we would have cancelled the second if the policy allowed it. This is four rooms up a staircase in a locked building, with no on-site staff, reception, lobby, lounge, or downstairs common area. The restaurant shown in photos is locked and used only for special events. We won’t stay again.
