Super 8 by Wyndham Portage

The room was clean, the bed was comfortable, and there was a really nice recliner in the room. The shower had excellent pressure and heat. Customer service was A+++ too. Definitely recommend, and thanks so much, ladies!

Room 222 was rundown and unclean. The toilet had no seat, the floor had soft spots, and the room smelled like the AC unit hadn’t been cleaned since it was installed. I wore socks all night because I wasn’t sure the floor had been cleaned, and I felt like I should have brought my rainbow vacuum to do the hallway and room floors myself. Outlet covers were missing, the bathroom floor around the toilet needed cleaning, and the vent fan had years of dust on it. It was also the first hotel I’ve stayed in without an elevator or a credit card swiping machine. At check-in, the Indian guy with a dot on his forehead at the front desk told me, “Most people pay cash when checking in and only stay a few hours.”

The staff were friendly and the rooms were in decent shape, though there were a few small holes where pictures used to hang and a bathroom light switch that needed several presses to work. Our first room had a toilet that was running, with the lid upside down on the tank and the lifting rod broken off inside. They moved us to another room. I booked with Super 8 partly for the free continental breakfast, hoping it would save my wife and me about $30. Breakfast was supposed to run until 10 a.m., but at 8:45 there were only two sausage links and no eggs. I thought they’d refill things before we left, but when we got to the eating area at 9:15, both were gone. Another guest said the food wasn’t being replenished, and the desk clerk confirmed it was cooked earlier and not replaced once it ran out. I was disappointed, since I expected it to be available until 10. I’ll have to think carefully about staying at a Super 8 again and weigh the price against these downsides.

The place feels unsafe for kids. Side and back doors are often left unlocked, and homeless people are regularly sleeping by the side entrance. Rooms are usually dirty, with stains and a dog smell, and the entire hotel reeks of dog and cat pee even though only certain rooms allow pets. You might get stained sheets but no blankets. Most TVs don’t work and someone always has to come fix them. The free breakfast is awful too, with honey buns that seem to have been in storage for years. The service is horrible. I’d give negative stars if I could.
