We loved the idea of having a full loft rather than a hotel room, and the Docent Collection seemed to have everything we wanted for a short getaway. We stayed in all three buildings, A. Robinson Block, Boyd Block, and Thompson Block, and gave it plenty of chances before deciding to write this. We won’t be booking again. Old Port is right at the heart of each property, and the locations are great. The lofts are modern and updated, parking is easy, and having all that space is appealing. But every loft we stayed in had curtains that didn’t block the outside light at night. There are curtains, but they don’t fit the windows well. If you need a dark room to sleep, this isn’t the place. We hoped Boyd Block would be better, but its curtains were worse than the other two. The beds aren’t comfortable either, and the light makes it nearly impossible to sleep. We often request no room service. A couple of times the concierge acknowledged that request through the text service, but we returned to find someone in the loft or signs that housekeeping had been there. The manager, Avery, also wasn’t customer friendly. On one stay, housekeeping was waiting for us well before the 11 a.m. checkout. We were in a larger loft, which I understand takes longer to clean, but housekeeping came to the direct elevator entrance about 30 minutes before checkout. Their cart was waiting as we carried things out to our car. Our group left right at checkout time, but about half an hour later my husband got a text saying we’d be charged a late fee for leaving after checkout. That wasn’t true. He spoke with Avery, and listening to the call, I was surprised by how little Avery seemed to listen and how rude he came across. He said housekeeping had reported that we weren’t out on time. The fee was removed, but the experience left a bad taste. I’ve seen another review mention Avery, too.

Staff were attentive and quick to respond, recommending several restaurants and even securing a last-minute reservation at a popular one. The digital entry and key system on your phone also made it easy to communicate with the team. We stayed three nights in August at the Docent Collection in Portland, Maine, and would absolutely return. The suite was spacious and clean, with a huge seating and kitchen area, plus complimentary coffee, water, and locally sourced snacks. Parking was right next to the property and convenient. It’s ideally located in Old Port, within walking distance of everything. A wonderful stay.

The loft was a great place to hang out, and I loved having a kitchen. It was easy to text with questions or ask for anything and get an immediate response. Sarah was super friendly and brought an extra dog bed for our dogs. They’re very pet friendly. The location was good, with easy walks downtown, to Washington Ave/Munjoy Hill, and up Congress to the West End. I preferred this experience to a more traditional boutique hotel.

My daughter and I had a two-bedroom, two-bath unit on the second floor of the Thomson Block, with lovely morning light and a charming view of Old Port. The beds were exceptionally comfortable, and the pillows felt luxurious. Getting into the unit was seamless, and parking was conveniently located. With its sleek modern design and thoughtful appointments, the property delivered a true five-star experience. The Docent is by far the finest accommodation I’ve had on my travels. I visit the northern region often, and this is among the most refined places I’ve stayed. We’re looking forward to returning soon.

There was no onsite concierge, but self check-in was smooth and suited the modern travel experience. The team communicated clearly and consistently, and responded quickly throughout our stay. The unit was cozy, clean, modern, and spacious, with a lovely apartment feel. I especially appreciated the comfortable bed after long days out, and the washer and dryer were an unexpected bonus. Even though it’s in a prime central spot, the area was quiet and peaceful. Being next to a police station also gave us a sense of safety. The Docent’s Collection is easy to get around from, whether walking around Old Port or driving farther. We absolutely recommend it if you want a roomy place with an apartment feel in a great location.
