The Duniway’s location is great for staying right downtown, with lots of good food and shopping just a short walk away. We spent three nights there and loved the lobby’s design and artwork. It’s a nice place to begin or finish the day, with a coffee bar and a bar with comfortable seating for meeting up. The food in the bar and restaurant was excellent, so we didn’t feel like trying anywhere else during our short stay. We ordered pickup from the Hilton's restaurant one morning for an early breakfast, and that meal was great too. At this time of year the rate was very inexpensive, so it felt like excellent value. The city’s homeless population could be a shock if you haven’t been to Portland or don’t often visit cities. Several people told me the situation had improved. The homeless people didn’t bother anyone, but it was confronting to see many on nearly every block, apparently using drugs or in severe mental health crisis. I felt pretty safe and only ran into a handful of situations that seemed potentially bad. I sincerely pray for the city and these people. People in Portland are welcoming in a genuine way, without being over the top. I highly recommend the Duniway and a visit to the Space Psychedelic Clinic to expand your horizons.
I’ve since read reviews from the past several months, and I’m livid. We paid $395 a night and the hotel moved us from the room we booked, 1957, to room 1857 one floor down. That room has clearly had bad reviews for a while. We’ll never stay here again. We’d booked room 1957, a corner king, for a busy weekend. Room 1857 was a bit rough: the headboard was badly scratched and the carpets need replacing, though I doubt that’ll happen soon. The Nespresso Tayst coffee maker was convenient, but the coffee wasn’t anything special. At least the bed was clean and comfortable. The room had the feel of a European hotel, clean but old. The attached parking garage was handy, since parking in Portland is rarely easy, and valet was available. The hotel seemed to cater to dog owners and families. It’s easy to reach, and getting to I5 from the hotel was very easy, which was a plus. I have the app and expected to get a digital key, but they asked me to stop at the front desk. The desk clerk was silent and took an awfully long time to check us in. For $400 a night, I’ll stay somewhere else on our next visit, though I know my expectations are pretty high.
The hotel has a great location and a nice lobby, but the customer service was terrible apart from the woman at the bar. We stayed through our Amex card because the place looked like it had a great vibe. It was freezing in the hotel, so we abandoned our drinks and went up to our room to warm up and get ready for dinner. Our fingers and toes were numb, and we took showers just to heat up. We hoped the heat would come on while we were out for the evening, but it didn’t. Someone came to the room in about 20 minutes and got it working, though it still barely warmed up. The room was 58 degrees. The same thing happened the next morning. It was a real letdown because the hotel itself and the location were great. I messaged the front desk through the app a few times. They replied, but weren’t very helpful. We’ll stay elsewhere next time, which is a shame given the location.
Anthony at the front desk was really helpful, and the lounge bar has a good happy hour until 6 pm. The location is handy for riverfront park, restaurants, and downtown. There are two Smart Park garages close by if you want to avoid the hotel's $35 garage parking. Mayrose gets very busy at peak times.
Halfway through my business conference, I got hurt and couldn't get around. The staff were empathetic and accommodating, bringing ice and my medication up to my room. Nobody brushed me off with “not my job”; they checked what they could do. Bill, Sydney, Colleen, Anthony, and Shaun from bell service all helped make the stay better. Thanks for taking such good care of me.
