Holiday Inn Express Poughkeepsie by IHG

The beds were quite nice, with piles of soft, oversized pillows, and it was quiet and comfortable enough that I’d probably stay again. The building is older and shows it, though. The whole place could use some sprucing up. The WiFi was really bad. I’m not sure if the routers don’t reach the ends of the building or if the connection itself is the issue. If I book again, I’ll insist on a room closer to the middle. For this type of hotel, breakfast was the best part. Fresh-ground coffee and warm cinnamon rolls were great, and there was a nice cereal station, decent scrambled eggs and turkey sausage patties, plus what I call the pancake printer. More fun to watch than eat, but interesting.

We arrived before check-in and the lovely woman at the front desk helped get us settled. I’m in a boot because of a fractured foot, so I asked for a room near the elevator, and she happily arranged it. The room was clean, and when it was serviced during our two-night stay, we got extra complimentary water bottles and Dove bar soap. Breakfast is complimentary every morning, with eggs, potatoes, sausage, a pancake maker, and a toaster. There’s also a well-stocked mini mart with fairly priced snacks, drinks, ice cream, and microwave meals. The location is great, close to local activities and places to eat. I’d highly recommend staying here. I just wish they had smart TVs for streaming!

The room itself was quite nice and comfortable, but the rest of the stay wasn’t good. At check-in I immediately felt discriminated against. I travel often and stay at many hotels, and I’ve never been told I had to pay for the stay up front. The front desk staff were rude from the moment I came in. The “free wifi” worked for about five minutes, the TV didn’t work, and the “complimentary breakfast” was both overcooked and soggy. I wouldn’t recommend this hotel or visit again.

I’ve stayed here a few times, and it’s been what I expected each time. The place is clean, the staff are generally friendly, breakfast is included, and the location works perfectly for me. I don’t tend to nitpick small things, so if that’s your style, you’ll have to decide for yourself. I don’t give 5 stars unless somewhere is amazing, but this is a pretty good hotel.
