Super 8 by Wyndham Richfield/Cleveland

The room seemed recently renovated and was clean. The mattress was better than many we’ve had at hotels lately, and I liked having a nightstand on each side of the bed. The lamps were oversized and too bright, though, and there still wasn’t a chair or table. Breakfast was simple. I usually don’t like hotel breakfasts and wish they’d all skip them. I’d stay again, and I’d be curious to see whether they keep making improvements.

We arrived at 4 a.m. with our small child after a tiring journey, only to be told at the front desk, with apologies, that there were no rooms. We had booked for May 26-27, paid, and received all the confirmations by email. We were just passing through and needed somewhere to sleep. They said there had been a “system glitch,” but I suspect they resold our room even though it was paid for. They never explained how this could happen, or why they didn’t text or email us more than half a day earlier if they knew there was a reservation but no room. I had to ask about a refund myself; otherwise, getting our money back never came up. Three police cars also arrived at the hotel during the night. Find somewhere else, and safer, to stay.

We stayed here for quite a while with my husband and our two-year-old daughter, and it was family friendly and clean. The staff were helpful and accommodating. I accidentally booked the same night twice when I meant to book the next day. They called to let me know, and I contacted Wyndham, but supper was closed. I planned to call again in the morning, then noticed the staff downstairs had already fixed it for me. I’m so thankful. We’ll stay here whenever we’re between homes.

The best part was the hot shower in the morning. Beyond that, it was basically just a bed and a shower, and the room shouldn’t have been offered in its current state. The bold painted stripes made it feel like a dorm, not an upgrade. There was no breakfast, though we’d booked partly for that, and the electronic lock took repeated attempts. An employee eventually opened it by showing us how to hold the card, and two staff members came up later to work on it. The small suite was mostly empty, with nowhere to sit except the bed and no coffee maker. They only had flimsy plastic cups for hot drinks, so I drove out to get something. The new TV turned on but had no program information on any channel. The room smelled strongly of a fake lemon cleaning product, and despite the no-smoking rooms, the building reeked of smoke. For three hours, I could hear people yelling and fighting in the hallway and nearby rooms through the thin walls. We booked for the location, price, and included breakfast, but it felt like a bad dorm room.
