The service was amazing, and the location is prime. I'd give it five stars if everything in the room worked. The second shower and a lamp didn't, and the heater was a problem too, though they do provide a small room heater. The tub was dirty, and the carpets need a good cleaning.

I came back for a second stay on November 7th, '25, before playing golf at Haggin Oaks the next morning. I wouldn't have trouble staying here again, though my wife probably wouldn't choose it. I give it a 3, and hope Windham can take a critical look and use what they have to bring it up to 4.5. The building is quiet and substantial, and the bed was very firm but comfortable enough that I slept well. There were plenty of pillows. Room 330 was clean, recently painted, and the furniture was in good repair. It had an older 50's-60's look, whether original or recreated, with a queen bed, fainting couch, period table, desk and chair, plus a fridge and microwave center styled to fit. The fridge was surprisingly cold and the microwave worked. The bathroom had newer counters and faucets, but the original iron and porcelain tub needed some repair to the porcelain at the bottom. I noticed a slight bacteria-like smell near the bathroom, which might respond to a deep carpet clean and Fabreeze. The hotel is in a tough part of town. The lobby desk is behind thick glass, and a man trap entrance might help guests feel safer and keep random homeless people from wandering in. Security was present and effective without drawing much attention. Despite the area, they seem to be doing their best to offer a decent stay and keep the place in good repair for a limited budget. From the fixtures and design, I suspect this was a higher-end hotel when it opened in the late '40's to early 50's. It fronts one-time US 40 / 99E, Auburn Blvd, and was probably a welcome stop for travelers coming from the east or the bay area. As the son of a very good architect, I appreciate the effort to preserve the feel of a bygone era by keeping the property in use and in repair.

The room felt filthy throughout. The bed and carpet were stained, as were the couch and upholstery. There was no heat, just a small space heater that had run for over an hour and raised the temperature by only one degree. It was 56° in the room. The bathroom door wouldn't open because the floor had buckled upward, and there were lots of gouges in the room door from break-ins. Most of the counters were coming loose from the wall. This place is nasty, and I'll never sleep here again.

When we arrived, the lobby smelled worse than my dog house. They said there was no heat in the hotel and that they'd provide an electric space heater. I don't know how this business is still operating. If zero stars were possible, that's what I'd give it. A homeless shelter would be better.
