I left after about three hours because I couldn’t sleep or feel comfortable, and my refund request was denied. The restroom was dirty, and I saw cockroaches in the shower area. I have video of that and will attach it. The bunks were child-sized, so I ended up trying to rest in a living room recliner. Other guests yelled at me and made me uncomfortable. I’d booked through Expedia earlier that day and was told check-in instructions would arrive by email within 30 minutes. I contacted them several times that evening without hearing back. The instructions finally showed up at 1:00 AM, after I’d been stranded outside for over an hour in the middle of the night. The lack of communication and refusal to address the problems made for a terrible stay. I wouldn’t recommend this hostel.

I’d rather stay here than have my own place. The community is great, and Junior, the host, is fantastic. Dylan, the house steward, is welcoming and helpful, and management is supportive and level-headed. The owner is trusting and very charitable. Be ready to pitch in with small things, and it’ll make your stay more comfortable. Steven Chio

Some friendly cats nearby kept me company until my ride came to get me out of there. I’d booked a private room expecting to be able to enter the building, but couldn’t get inside. I knocked, rang the doorbell and camera, and called both the corporate number and the one on my reservation. Each time, the reservation number went to voicemail after a few rings, and I got nowhere. The property seemed nearly abandoned and unwelcoming, with signs telling visitors to call the police if certain people were on site. I gave up and booked a bunk at the HI in the actual city.

WHOLE Family has some of the best lodging rates I’ve seen in California, with both short-term and lease options for longer stays. It’s a hostel, so you can choose a private room or shared lodging. The home and bedding are cleaned daily, and customer relations are well tended. Service is above average. I had a positive experience and would recommend staying with WHOLE Family while in California.
