The Duncan House made a lovely choice for my 50th birthday trip. Andy was a gracious host, and breakfast came with fresh-squeezed orange juice, great coffee, and plenty of good conversation. He has a lot of local knowledge and life stories to share. St. Joseph’s is a fun place to visit, and I can see this being a great spot for a romantic weekend.

We loved the quiet neighborhood and the easy walk to bluff views for sunset. The beach, shops, restaurants, bars, and wine tasting spots were also an enjoyable half-mile stroll away. The house and our room were beautiful, and the bed was especially comfortable. Nita and Andy were helpful and kept us supplied with treats, including salsa, guacamole, cookies, lemonade, and wine at check-in. We relaxed with a snack in the backyard, though we didn’t get to try the hot tub for two. Breakfast was terrific: fruit parfait, homemade croissants and jams, and egg soufflé. Andy shared stories about his great-grandmother’s well-known recipes, too. We came for a quick Friday getaway and got the romantic weekend we hoped for. Thanks, Andy and Nita.

Breakfast was a highlight, especially the fruit and yogurt parfait, homemade cinnamon rolls, blue cheese and sweet pepper omelet, and toast from homemade bread with butter and jam. Andy cooked and told us about the history of the house and St. Joseph. The room, called the Michigan room, had thoughtful decorations, a comfortable four-poster queen bed with lots of pillows, and a roomy attached bath and closet. The multi-jet tub and shower were nice at the start and end of the day. The innkeepers, Andy and Nita, greeted us with a tour. The grounds were lovely and the inside spotless. It’s on a tree-lined street, an easy walk from downtown and Lion’s and Silver Beach. We also enjoyed sitting on the porch with cookies and fresh-squeezed lemonade. This was our first B&B, and we’d recommend it to friends and plan to come back.

Andy’s local tips made a big difference. He marked favorite restaurants and sunset spots on a town map, then gave us detailed guidance for hiking Grand Mere state park the morning we left. We had an incredible time there and wouldn’t have known how to approach it on our own. The hotel sits in a cool historic neighborhood within easy walking distance of downtown. We stayed in the upstairs beach escape suite, which was comfortable and well appointed. The food was amazing, too. We had a great time at Duncan House. Just book it.

We had the whole second floor to ourselves and settled in easily. Andy even managed to get us a last-minute table at a local restaurant, where we had the best ribeye ever at 221 Main. We also used the outdoor hot tub and the soft bathrobes provided. Breakfast the next morning was beautifully prepared, a real luxury. For our first visit to St Joseph and our first B&B stay, the Duncan House went beyond what we’d hoped. We were welcomed with fresh-baked cookies, infused water, and local wine, and enjoyed hearing about Andy’s family history. We had a lot of fun. Thanks, Andy, for sharing what the Duncan House has to offer.
