Country Inn & Suites by Radisson, San Antonio Medical Center, TX

The rooms and decor feel a little dated, so to me this is a solid three-star hotel. Still, we had a pleasant stay. The breakfast bar was delicious and offered plenty of options, and the food exceeded what I expected. Most of all, the staff made things better. Everyone we met was kind, welcoming, and helpful.

On this latest visit, we had a rough start in room 137. There were dead roaches, and after staff said to wait ten minutes for hot water, we waited more than an hour and still had none. The staff understood and moved us promptly to room 338, where the hot water worked reliably. We appreciate how quickly they dealt with the problem. We look forward to trying the bed and food in the new room. My first stay was mostly good. The bed in room 317 was incredibly comfortable and I slept well, though the food could have been better. So the two visits have been quite different.

It's not terrible, but it's not great either. The staff are always nice, though they don't take the initiative. I have to go over and get them to look up from their phones before they'll help. A bit more vacuuming and cleanup would make a big difference.

The rooms were clean and the hospitality was great, but that gate is a frustrating, pointless decision. You need a code to exit, which is fine, but the same code won't let you in. The front desk told me pedestrians can't use any code, and I ended up stuck at the gate for ten minutes. I can't see a reason for a gate in an area that isn't dangerous. That's why I can't give the hotel five stars.
