Hotel Contessa

The city or Riverwalk view is phenomenal, and the coffee at the Ambler is great. The location puts you close to everything in San Antonio, with a CVS a block away and a What-a-Burger two blocks away, which is a big deal in TX. From the lobby through to the room, the hotel feels warm and inviting instead of institutional. Our drive from Houston was a headache, but Karen could tell we were frazzled and anticipated what we'd need. She even sent up a charcuterie plate and chilled water to make us comfortable. This is the best hotel we've experienced in the last 10 years, and we're already planning to return.

I spoke with Alec today because we're now planning another trip to San Antonio. Back in 2018, my family had a carefully planned day-by-day stay at Hotel Contessa, with Sea World scheduled for day two. When we went to valet that morning to get our car, the keys were missing. We stayed patient, but lost almost an entire day while they searched. After reviewing the cameras, they found that the valet had left our keys in another customer's car. They apologized and offered us a free meal, and a senior manager said we'd get a comp on a future stay. We explained that we don't travel there often, but would be back in a few years. Now that we've booked another trip, Alec told me they wouldn't help because too many years had passed. I understand it's been a while, but I feel a hotel, even under new ownership, should keep a record and honor its word. We won't return. We were bringing a large group for state archery, so the hotel has lost a lot of business by not keeping that promise.

There were lots of homeless people around, and the area felt crowded during our Monday to Wednesday visit. The Riverwalk was beautiful, and the staff and bar were both 5/5. The couch smelled like urine, though, and all they offered were blankets to cover it. We weren't in the room much, and the kids had folding cots. Valet brought me the wrong vehicle, so my two young kids, one disabled, Grandma, and I had to wait outside. They apologized and made it right the next day. If you're after something special and a great experience, I'd pick a different hotel or maybe an Airbnb.

The spacious room had a very comfortable bed, and I loved the Christmas decorations as a big holiday fan. As my first visit to San Antonio, I wanted somewhere comfortable and high quality, and Hotel Contessa exceeded what I expected. It's one of the best hotels I've stayed in. The location is great for tourist spots and downtown, with a beautiful view of the river. I had an amazing stay.
