Rancho Bernardo Inn

The golf round was a lot of fun. The greens were in great shape, we enjoyed playing with the people we were paired with, and the course is walkable, as one person in our party did. The caddies were on top of things, and the pro shop was the best stocked one we’ve come across recently. We came as JC card members, and the shop staff efficiently set us up with the bonus pack. Since we were signing up as we arrived, our cards wouldn’t have reached us in time to play. We appreciate the Inn staff taking care of it. The Inn is a beautiful place to visit, and we’d definitely return. I have two complaints: the driving range was closed, and the golf carts slowed painfully whenever you accidentally left the marked areas. It took so long to get back to the right place that the system didn’t make much sense. There are benefits to joining JC online or through the app, including free balls.

At night, Rancho Bernardo Inn feels almost surreal. Lights along the trees and paths turn the grounds into a glowing scene, and the warm California evenings make it easy to wander around at an unhurried pace. It’s a memorable, immersive place after dark. By day, the resort has preserved Spanish architecture, with arches, courtyards and warm details that feel timeless rather than staged. The setting combines old world charm with the relaxed feel of Southern California. Thoughtful lighting, a consistent look and a calm, luxurious pace make Rancho Bernardo Inn feel transportive, like walking through a beautifully imagined film set.

The restaurants were a real perk. One has lovely outdoor tables and a live band in the evenings, so it’s an easy spot to unwind with a drink and a bite. There are three pools and spas too, and the large pool at Rancho Bernardo is great for spending a spa day. We were there for four nights. The service was great, the rooms were clean, the beds comfortable, and the grounds beautiful. The hotel is older and could use some maintenance, though. We also played the open 18-hole course. It was nice, but the round moved slowly and the course felt pretty crowded.

We brought our two beagles and had a great stay. It’s a well-established place with a historic feel, and a nice spot for relaxing or playing golf. I’d definitely come back.
