HTL 587, an Ascend Hotel Collection Member

The room was clean, had no smell, and had a cute charm. The bed was really comfortable, and the location put us close to everything. There were a lot of homeless people outside, but they didn’t bother us, sometimes just saying hi or wishing us a good day. It was a bit loud outside, which I expected. I arrived early and the two guys at the front desk handled it with no trouble. I was missing a TV remote, so I went down; they asked what brand the TV was, apologized, and gave me one. They said to call if it didn’t work and they’d bring up another. The place feels like a gem to me, and I don’t get why it’s only a 2-star hotel. I could see it being 3 or 4 stars. The price was below what I’d pay for a night, though please don’t raise it because I said that, lol. The owner and staff do a great job maintaining and furnishing it, and their friendly attitude felt real, unlike at a lot of hotels I’ve stayed in. I’d definitely come back. Thanks for a great stay.

We were still very happy with our stay, despite a couple of small issues: the phone in our room didn’t work, and there was a cobweb by the bathroom. Outside noise carried in because the street stays busy late, so keep that in mind. The building is old but well cared for, and the interior design is lovely. It was my first time riding an old-style elevator like the ones I’d only seen in movies. The hotel was clean and looked newly renovated, with a big smart TV in the room. I’d call this a hidden gem too. It’s very affordable for a great hotel, and to me it deserves 3 or 4 stars rather than 2.

We left after finding a cockroach in the second room and checked into another hotel. In the first room we’d found three, along with sticky floors, a used plastic fork on the floor, and a couple of exposed wires. The bed and pillows, at least, were super comfortable. The second room was cleaner and had no exposed wires, but there was still a roach. The management did their best. After we told them the first room was dirty, it smelled like bleach when we came back. They moved us to a different floor, and refunded me without any trouble. The location felt a little rough, but it was close to plenty of things, including bus and BART stations. For how cheap it is, I guess that’s what you get.

The only real problem was the radiator. It started making a lot of noise around 1 a.m., and neither we nor the staff could get it to stop. The front desk worker immediately let us switch rooms and leave our things in the old one to collect in the morning. They were understanding and helpful, and the whole thing took about 10 minutes. The front desk staff were always incredibly nice, and the rooms are updated, clean, and very comfortable, with a huge bed, lots of pillows, and a big TV with plenty of channels. It’s an old building with lots of character. The area felt a little sketchy but harmless during the day. We took cabs at night to be safe and had no issues. It can be noisy, as you’d expect in a big city, but they provide earplugs, which helped. Lovely hotel and service. I’d definitely stay again.
