The Crystal River Inn

I had the whole building to myself for two nights, which was a lot of fun. There’s no breakfast, but plenty of food nearby within walking distance. My room had a fridge, bottled water, coffee, and tea, and there was ice downstairs. The front sitting room had old-world elegance, and I liked the background music. We also enjoyed a bottle of champagne out on the balcony chairs. I usually choose hotels for the free breakfast and points, but I may have found a new routine in San Marcos.

My wife loved the Medina room and the little den downstairs, while I especially liked how clean the place was and what it cost. The location was great, and getting in and out of the inn was easy. We had an excellent anniversary stay, and we’d definitely return. They offer an anniversary/honeymoon package, so call ahead and ask about it.

The inn felt homey and pleasantly old fashioned. The rooms are dated, but in a good way, and there are shops on the first floor. If you’re a young adult, you’ll probably love the vibe. I also liked that downtown, Target, and HEB are close and easy to reach on foot or by skateboard. We brought paddle boards and loved going to the river. Anyone who likes photography should check out the local shops, which are fun and engaging. We booked through AMEX at the last minute and they still found us a room for F1 race weekend. The location was very accommodating. Our window faced the road and the street was a bit loud, but they had earplugs and sound machines available. It isn’t very handicap friendly, with two floors and no elevator. I imagine they warn guests ahead of time or have a room available for people who need services. They were accommodating with rooms and lodging overall. Parking is a little unusual. You can use a tiny lot or alley, or park on the street behind the building. That was no issue for us, and I loved how it felt like a different part of the world. Best place to stay in San Marcos, hands down.

We stayed in the Barton Springs room in this beautiful former bed and breakfast. The old wood made the house feel cozy, and check-in was easy. Our room had a huge bed, TV, cute lighting, a mini couch and table, plus a fridge with a freezer. There was a wardrobe and a small closet, too. The bathroom had a jacuzzi tub, though I didn’t get a chance to try it on my short trip. The place was a seven-minute walk from The Marc, the EDM venue, and a short walk from HEB for groceries and snacks. It was very well priced, and I can’t wait to come back and try a bigger room.
