We’re loyal Hyatt guests, and the room itself impressed us: it was a spacious, comfortable king room on the top floor, with a good layout. Room service, the front desk, and valet were all top-notch. But we arrived tired and hungry around 8:30 p.m., hoping for a sit-down dinner at The Placery. Hyatt Customer Service had led us to believe it was a restaurant, but it’s more like an upscale 7-11 with a limited menu prepared by the front desk. There were no plastic cups in the bathroom either. The TV has no cable, so you need your own streaming service, and the instructions for connecting an Apple device weren’t clear because it uses Google. The front desk had limited knowledge to help, and the hotel website didn’t mention this. As Hyatt members, we get late checkout, but the day before leaving they slipped a memo under the door saying mattress replacement work would start in our room at 10 a.m. the next day. Gee, thanks for the late checkout. The room is pricey and the amenities are hit or miss, so we’re unsure about returning.

The property was great, clean, and well serviced. We enjoyed the breakfast, the friendly valet, and the easy walk to the boardwalk. Our ground-floor room, I think room 114, faced the pool courtyard, but having the shade open felt awkward, as if pool guests could look in or we could look out at them. People using the outdoor shower came right up by our window, and noise from the nearby workout room sometimes sounded like construction in the next room. I’d return, but ask for a different floor instead of the ground floor.

Our anniversary trip ran from September 7th through September 13th, and this was our first Hyatt stay. It was exactly what my fiancé and I wanted. The third-floor room was a great size for two, and the staff were friendly and helpful. Gabriel on the valet team was amazing. Housekeeping showed up on time each day. Breakfast was easy and offered plenty of choices, and the pool was never too packed. We loved the hot tub on chilly nights, and the fire pit was especially cozy and romantic. Having a guest washer and dryer was handy, and snacks and drinks were available at the front desk when we didn’t want to go out. The location sits nicely between the beach boardwalk and Downtown Santa Cruz, and I recommend the hotel. One note: Hyatt Place Santa Cruz offers valet parking only, at $19 a day, and that price is listed on its website. Complaints about the fee are because people didn’t research their stay, not the hotel’s fault.

My car was damaged while it was with the hotel valet during my December 5-7 stay. When they returned it, there was a significant ding in the door that hadn’t been there before. Neither the hotel nor the valet company would accept responsibility. I was also told at check-in that guests couldn’t enter the garage for any reason, including parking their own cars or collecting luggage, and I followed that rule. Later, my dash cam showed several families being allowed inside to get luggage and spend extended time there. When I raised this and offered the footage, the valet owner dismissed it, saying nobody was allowed in and he didn’t know what I meant, despite the video. The day after the damage, the front desk said my vehicle was “under review” and garage footage was being examined. Later, the valet owner said there had been no footage or vehicle review at all. Those conflicting accounts made it harder to trust them. On Sunday, the car was moved out of the garage without my knowledge or permission. I got a notification that it had been unlocked. At checkout, the valet said staff thought I was coming to retrieve it, even though I was still in my room and hadn’t asked for it. They later explained someone had pulled the wrong ticket, and my car was nearly released to another guest before they noticed the mistake. They acted like this was routine and nothing to worry about. I’d have had no idea my car had been moved without the real-time vehicle alerts. The way I was treated added to the problem. A valet employee swore at me, said more than once that he didn’t care about his job or the cars he drove, and that it was his last week and he “could care less.” It was alarming to know he was driving guests’ cars, and he was later fired. Hotel staff were dismissive too, with front desk employees rolling their eyes when I tried to discuss the incident. I followed up by phone, text, and email, and spoke with several managers, but nobody got back to me or took ownership of resolving the damage. The eye-rolling, hostile valet interaction, dismissal of evidence, and refusal by both the hotel and valet service to engage left me feeling unsupported and unheard. I didn’t feel safe, respected, or valued, and Hyatt’s lack of help made that worse. I expected professionalism and accountability from a brand like Hyatt, but got avoidance, denial, and indifference. I strongly caution future guests about using this hotel’s valet, and hope Hyatt corporate takes this seriously.

The rooms have plenty of space and were clean, and the whole place smelled nice. We’ve stayed here lots of times because the staff are friendly and the hotel is kept in really good shape. The pool and hot tub are fun too, and we like having breakfast included.
