The Desoto Hotel

The hotel's history and distinctive character are appealing, and its location puts you close to the places that make Savannah feel like Savannah. Staff were excellent and seemed genuinely happy to be there. Breakfast at the hotel restaurant was outstanding, especially the grits, and reasonably priced for such an upscale property. My main gripe is how bare the rooms are. There's no microwave, fridge, ice bucket, or coffee maker, and the balconies have no chairs. For $200 a night, even at an off-season promotional rate, I expected more of those basics. A fancy umbrella doesn't make up for them. The building is Savannah's tallest, and the upper-floor balcony views are incredible, so it's a shame there's nowhere to sit with coffee or a cocktail. When I asked reception, the explanation about a renovation and chairs not being put back was hard to follow. For parking, there's a garage about 100 yards beyond the entrance that may cost $15 a night, compared with $48 plus a valet tip. If you ask, they can provide a mini fridge free of charge. I'd imagine they'd bring a couple of balcony chairs too if requested.

Our room was clean, with very comfortable beds and pillows, and all the staff were friendly and helpful. The valet team were especially nice, and they can store luggage if you've checked out but have time before your flight. The hotel is in a perfect spot, within a 5-10 minute walk of everything. We each had a $23 voucher for the bar or cafe, but the food was disappointing. The mozzarella sticks had no flavor, the marinara was bland, the crackers were hard, and the pimento cheese was basically shredded cheese. We didn't like the cafe food much either. The iced vanilla and honey bee lattes were average, and the Madison breakfast sandwich needed sauce or seasoning. I called the week before to ask about the pool and was told it would be open when we arrived, but it wasn't. We didn't have a fridge in our room, though I don't know if that's true of all rooms. It is a nice hotel, and I'd like to return in summer. Our only complaints were the food and the closed pool.

The DeSoto was beautiful, spotless, and decorated with Christmas trees throughout. We stayed one night and were very happy with the service. Check-in was easy, the room was spotless, and the bed was comfortable. Coffee from the downstairs bar was very good. Valet parking was convenient, and the staff there were quick and friendly. Thank you, Gary! We'd stay again and recommend it.

Our annual event at The DeSoto Savannah was our best yet, and our partners left impressed. I handle the planning and logistics each year, and with several meeting rooms and many partners to coordinate, the staff made everything smooth and stress-free. The food came out quickly and tasted great, the hotel is beautiful, and its walkable location was convenient for attendees. The kindness and attentiveness of everyone went beyond expectations and made the event run seamlessly.
