The people were nice, but I was shocked to find my bank card charged twice for the same room, three days apart, before I arrived. I paid the remaining balance when I checked in. I don’t understand why they charged 50% more than advertised and then charged taxes again. Two nights cost me $700, with no amenities. Booking. com was offering the room for $400 for two nights, and I was charged double that.

The rooms are all different, and some only have bathtubs, so ask ahead if you need a shower. The hotel is historic and well preserved, with lots of history, including the statue out front. There’s a big wraparound porch with plenty of seats, a nice place to relax, and the attached Open Range restaurant is a must visit. Our room was very clean, the bed was comfortable, and they offer free breakfast in the morning. The location is great, too.

It’s wonderful that the inn is still open. My wife and I stayed at the original inn on our honeymoon in the 1950s, and we love it. Our visit a few nights ago was good otherwise, but it felt like the place had slipped a little. Several people were around, yet no one offered a tour or shared the building’s history. I overheard someone ask the desk clerk about it and get, “I don’t know, I’ll have to ask.” I was sad to learn that Michael, the young man who took such good care of us before, is no longer there.

I was excited to stay here in August, and loved the hotel, but I won’t be coming back. We were there for one night, and while I ate breakfast my husband packed our things. That evening, at our next stop, I noticed my pajamas were missing. They were a gift from my daughter, who had just married in Laramie, so losing them broke my heart. I called three times, gave them the name of the woman who cleaned our room, and was told different things each time. I also left a voicemail for the manager, but no one returned my call. I’d planned to stay again next year on our trip out west, but I won’t do business with a place that can’t call back. Shady housekeeping, it felt like someone had taken them. 😢

The breakfast was below average for a hotel, though there are plenty of local shops just down the street if you want something else. The building is beautiful and has been preserved enough to keep its character while still feeling comfortable. The train across the street is also worth taking a minute to look at.
