Oliver Inn Bed and Breakfast

During our latest three-night visit, we stayed in the west-facing Gertrude's Room. The queen bed and comfy loveseat left enough room to move around, and there was a large bathroom and enough closet space for our clothes. As on our earlier stays, the second-floor rooms we've tried have all been comfortable and clean, with their own furniture and bathroom layouts. We still have other rooms to try, so we'll be back to sleep and relax in them. This was our fourth, or maybe fifth, visit to The Oliver Inn in ten years. What began as an interesting place to stay for Notre Dame sporting events has turned into a reason to drive up for a long weekend, explore the area, and catch a couple of hockey games. Alice and Tom are down-to-earth, excellent hosts who lovingly maintain their historic home and share it with guests. Breakfast is a simple but thoughtful spread of quality items, served daily in the formally decorated first-floor dining room. Tom or Alice bring beverages to the table, and the filling meal makes for a good start to the day. Guests can chat across tables, too. The other common rooms have decor that suits the home's history, and it's worth taking time on a first visit to look around the first floor and settle into the mood of the place. We hope other travelers discover this special South Bend getaway and enjoy the hospitality, comfort, and personal service Alice and Tom provide.

We’ve stayed at the Oliver Inn several times, in both the main house and the carriage house. Tom and Alice are kind and accommodating, the rooms are always immaculate, and breakfast is homemade and delicious. I’d gladly recommend it to anyone staying in South Bend. Go Irish.

We stayed overnight for the Edgar Allen Poe Speakeasy, just a block away, and had a great visit. Alice showed us around when we arrived and pointed us toward our destination, an easy walk. The house is fun to explore, trying to guess what’s original and what has changed; most of it still feels original, with updates done well. The food was great, and breakfast was especially enjoyable while chatting with other guests. It was comfortable and surprisingly quiet. Recommend staying.

Oliver Inn was cozy, clean, and had a comfy bed. It’s close to Notre Dame and there are lots of restaurants nearby. I loved finding chocolate mints on the bed when we arrived. Alice was thoughtful and hospitable, gave us great food suggestions, and made sure we had a delicious home-cooked breakfast before we got back on the road. We’ll definitely return when we're in the area.
