Townsend Manor Inn

We stayed in July, and the mold and mildew smell in our room was so bad that I considered sleeping in the car. I know these are old, beautiful historic buildings, but the air in our room felt unhealthy. When I asked at the desk, they handed me a can of Glade. That only left the room smelling like a musty toilet bowl. I called again when it didn’t help and was basically told there was nothing to be done. No apology, either. The main house didn’t have a smell. At $400 a night, it was frustrating to go to bed and wake up with a headache because the problem wasn’t addressed. Other reviews suggest it may have been an issue for years. I would’ve left the windows open all night, but it was 90 degrees. Something needs repair, whether that means replacing the carpets or fixing the walls, so guests can breathe comfortably. It’s a shame, because the location is perfect, the pool is very nice, and the property has a lot of charm. I suspect it may be limited to the last small building, but it still needs to be made livable for paying guests.

I came with a group for lunch and wasn’t impressed with the food. The chicken seemed low quality, with a chewy, fatty texture and some hard bits, so I had to spit it out. The salmon was just so-so and rather mushy. Maybe that was because it was buffet service, I’m not sure. I’d be willing to try dining from the menu as a guest in case that food is better. I thought they’d make an effort to impress a group of 50 first-timers, but they didn’t.

The hotel’s location is excellent, just a short stroll from Greenport’s main streets and town. Staff were kind and friendly, and free on-site parking was included. The pool looked lovely too. We booked only a few days before the trip because this was the only reasonably priced hotel in the area. Renovations were clearly underway. Our building, Gingerbread, had recently been painted outside, and inside the room was spacious and very clean. The decor was dated, though, and the beds felt worn and ready for an upgrade. Everything else worked fine. We got what we paid for and would come back if the beds are updated.

The location is great, and the woman at the front desk was friendly and accommodating. We had a king room with a balcony overlooking the pool, and it was decent. It’s an older place, so some blemishes were expected. We were happy with the stay and I’d book it again.
