Holiday Inn Spearfish - Convention Center by IHG

The staff were great, and check-in was easy, but the room was deplorable. It was spacious, with a separate bedroom door, and that was the only part that didn't smell like mold and dirty wet socks. The shower and curtain were coated in something like pink mold and looked as if they hadn't been cleaned in years. The curtain smelled so foul I wouldn't have used the shower even if it had been clean. After driving 17.5 hours, I couldn't bring myself to leave, but it was a huge disappointment. This was one of the worst Holiday Inn's I've stayed at. If you have other options, stay somewhere else.

Debbie at the front desk was the bright spot. She was kind, professional, and doing her best to help everyone while clearly overwhelmed. But one person can't run a whole hotel. There seemed to be only a couple of employees for the entire property, or perhaps just Debbie at the desk. There was no maintenance staff on duty, and one guest said he had to fix a problem in his own room because nobody was available. That's unacceptable for this price. The rest of the experience was a major disappointment. The property was in extremely poor condition, far below what I'd expect from an expensive Holiday Inn. Rooms were dirty, with stains on carpets, ceilings, furniture, and even bedding. The beds were uncomfortable, rooms reeked of smoke despite being labeled non-smoking, and the shower head leaked so badly that more water came out the side than through it. The on-site restaurant was just as bad. The food was so poorly prepared it was barely edible, some of the worst I've had at a hotel restaurant. The place is run down, dirty, and badly managed. It doesn't match the price, and I'm not sure it meets health standards. I don't recommend staying here. For what they charge, you're better off booking anywhere else in Spearfish.

We ended up extending our stay by another night because we enjoyed it so much. Debra was delightful and accommodating when we called after many failed attempts to book a room in Rapid. The rooms were clean and well kept, and the updated pool area was welcoming and very family friendly. Luckys had friendly staff and delicious food, too. I've been coming here since I was a kid, and it's still clean and comfortable. The staff are amazing, from housekeeping to the front desk, and the pool, meeting rooms, and hotel overall are great. I also like the remodeled pool and arcade area, especially the toddler pool. The rooms could use a facelift, though. The HVAC unit is very old and the AC doesn't work well, and the TV is old and not a smart TV. Maybe updating the rooms should be the next step.
