La Quinta Inn & Suites by Wyndham St. Augustine

My family stayed here for a while as we searched for a home around Palatka, and this is the hotel I'd recommend. The staff and management are kind and caring. We've stayed in several hotels during this search, and this one had the most comfortable beds and pillows. If I need to stay near St Augustine again, I'll definitely come back.

I was here for a company trip, and the first room, 313, smelled like urine. There was goo all over and inside the microwave, with roaches coming out of it. We changed rooms to 217, which smelled much better, though still musty. I put my things down after checking the microwave and the rest of the room. Later, when we came back to settle in for the night, the toilet was leaking and the floor was soaked. It was late, so I figured we'd eat, shower, and go to bed. But the shower curtain was filthy on the inside and had no liner. Then the drain backed up, sending dark particles onto my feet. The sink was backing up too when I went to brush my teeth. The night attendant was completely monotone and had no personality, as if this happens all the time. They need to get it together as a company. Prices are high everywhere, but this stay was a waste. My car would've been a better option.

I stayed in room 317 on my second visit this week. The first time I was assigned room 321, and the bathroom was unclean, so I was moved. Same problems in 317 on a different night: a nasty bathroom, soap scum in the shower, streaks everywhere, and stringy hair from the previous guest still on the shower walls. It looked like the toilet and mirror had been wiped with dirty cloths, probably the same one. I had to ask for cleaning supplies to redo the room myself. The loud bathroom fan and light share a switch, which is extremely annoying when using the bathroom overnight. There's rust in the microwave, and the AC runs constantly with no Auto setting. Breakfast is simple and sad. I'm a disabled Army vet and a Diamond Member with Wyndham. There's nothing greeting you at check-in. When I checked out earlier this week, I told the manager about these problems and asked for points or some kind of compensation for the inconvenience. She did nothing, no discount and no points. I am requesting at least 5,000 points added to my account for this stay and my last stay. Yes, you have the power to do that. Use it! This is unacceptable. Take your money elsewhere. It's not worth the upcharge most hotels have from Thursday through Saturday. I'd recommend the Quality Inn a few steps down the street instead. The breakfast is a little better there.

The beds were comfortable, and the hotel is near St. Augustine. I only spotted one or two cockroaches during our night there. That’s about where the good news ends. The building smelled musty as soon as we walked in, and the linens in our room had various stains. Breakfast was poor, with almost no protein. At $86, it might make sense if that’s your limit, but with another $10-$20 a night you could stay at the seaside Best Western we chose the next night, or look at the hotels next door. The place gave off bad vibes and seemed poorly managed, based on what I saw and read in other reviews. It felt only a little better than a homeless shelter, like an old LaQuinta that had reached the point of being torn down and turned into one. I wouldn’t recommend it.
