The Essex Inn

Breakfast was a highlight each morning, with pastries, sausage or bacon, fruit, home fries, and more, all served on fine china. The Essex Inn felt both pampering and homey. Our room was beautifully furnished and so comfortable, and the quiet helped us sleep soundly every night. The house is full of historic character, with each room showing its timeless beauty. Greg and Jennifer Huff were welcoming and eager to share Tappahannock’s history, which added a lot to our visit. We had a wonderful stay and would recommend the inn to anyone looking for comfort, hospitality, and historic charm.

We only stayed one night, but we'd happily return. The three-course breakfast was delicious, and the coffee machine made espresso, lattes, café, and decaf. Our room was lovely, with a very comfortable bed. The house has beautiful antiques, lighting, china, and art. The owners were charming and glad to show us around and talk about the house and its antiques. There are porches, including a covered one, and a garden area where you can sit outside.

The rooms were comfortable and furnished with beautiful pieces, and our hosts were personable and great. We stayed two nights and really enjoyed the experience. There are thoughtful extras for guests to help themselves to, including drinks, coffee, and snacks in the butler’s pantry. Be sure to have breakfast at the inn, and dinner at 1710 Tavern across the street. What a stunning place.

We were able to walk right across the street from the Essex Inn for dinner each night, which was a great bonus since Greg and Jennifer also own 1710 Tavern. The restaurant has incredible food and a fine dining feel. Back at the inn, Greg’s three-course breakfast was delicious, and we enjoyed chatting with other guests over breakfast. Our suite had a very comfortable bed. Greg and Jennifer are wonderful hosts, and their home is a gorgeous historic house. Consider staying here and dining at 1710 Tavern on your next trip. You won’t be disappointed.
