Breakfast was bad: the eggs were off and the biscuits were impossible to eat. The sausage was okay, the coffee was good, and I didn’t try the self-serve waffles. This is a new hotel, but the lobby smelled like raw sewage when we walked in. The desk said the odor comes and goes, though the rooms they assign don’t smell that way. Our first room had a door lock that didn’t work, so we were moved. The replacement room was a little musty, but we stayed. At 4 a.m. the fire alarm went off, then stopped after a few minutes. I wouldn’t stay there again.
It was decent for the price, and we got a good night's sleep with our dogs, which they accepted. We were driving from South Padre Island to Minnesota and stopped in Galveston. There aren’t many food places within walking distance. The staff could use more training, since they didn’t seem to know much about the rooms. When I wanted to do laundry, there was no detergent at the desk, and the employee told me it was automatic in the washer. It wasn’t.
The one helpful person was a kind housekeeper who brought me extra towels. Otherwise, this was a terrible stay, and I was relieved to leave. I booked a two-day trip through Expedia and was charged more than expected without an explanation. They refused to refund the overcharge. Getting there was confusing unless you know the area, since you have to drive through a neighborhood or construction. The staff were unfriendly, and the lobby smelled of an indoor pool mixed with mold and mildew. I reserved a deluxe king suite based on the photos, but the room didn’t match them. On the second floor, there were so many soft spots in the floor that we nearly fell several times. We had to press the elevator button about six times to get either elevator to open. The sofa was filthy, with visible handprints from previous guests. Of three lamps, only one had a bulb, and just one outlet worked. Another looked as though it had caught fire. The thermostat barely worked, and with no TV guide and no information about the channels, we had to guess what we were watching. They also don’t do daily housekeeping, which no one mentioned at check-in. When I called for more towels, the phone was off the hook; when I went to the desk, no one was there. Never again. I absolutely do not recommend it.
The smell was so strong that we checked out at 9 p.m. The whole place smelled of mold, mildew, chemicals, and Glade plug-ins, and it gave us headaches. The lobby also smelled like sewage, despite all the plug-ins they used to mask it. When I told the woman at the desk, she said she’d been there since 4 and asked why we hadn’t come sooner. We’d been in Galveston for a few hours and hoped the smell would fade by the time we returned. It hadn’t. We also found an opioid pill in the room’s accent chair. When I told her, she smiled, rolled her eyes, and asked if I’d taken a picture. The front desk staff were rude, and the whole stay was awful. I’m now trying to get a refund from both the booking company and the hotel. I wish I’d read the reviews first. Home 2 suites by Hilton right next door treated us much better, and I’d suggest going there.
We’ve stayed here before, but this time the front desk service was completely different. We arrived on January 3rd at 2:30 p.m. with our reservation name and were told coldly and unprofessionally that no rooms were available before 3. While waiting, we heard a man being checked into his room before 3. Maybe his arrangement was different, but the employee could at least have asked whether we’d accept what was available. At check-in I noticed a sign saying we’d be charged if the wick air freshener was missing at checkout. I called to say there wasn’t one in our room, but when I asked, she put me on hold for about ten minutes and never answered the simple question. I hung up, and she didn’t call back to see if I needed help. There was also an ironing board but no iron. I didn’t bother calling because I expected another endless hold. This location needs customer service training as soon as possible.
