Cousins Country Inn

I was pleasantly surprised by how spacious the room was. It had modern amenities but still felt comfortable, especially the bed, which had appreciated box springs. The thick cotton sheets were great, and the mini fridge had a proper freezer that fit my freezer blocks. Everything was clean and well kept, with fairly new carpet and counters. The bathroom was the only part that could use work. A bowed shower rod and a better fitting toilet seat would help. Otherwise, pretty much perfect.

We ate at the bar today, our first visit in maybe a year. It used to be a favorite stop for us because the food was tasty, drinks were great, and it was good value. This time the turkey dinner wasn't great, the stuffing was hard, and the basic burger was overcooked and greasy. Such a disappointment. Not sure what happened.

We stayed in a clean room with vaulted ceilings and a fireplace, and it met expectations. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful. The restaurant on site served a great breakfast, and hotel guests get a discount. We were trying to keep costs down while visiting hood river, and this location worked well. The drive there was only 18 minutes, with a nice view of the columbia river along the way. I'd recommend taking highway 30 for some of the best views I've seen. There are also plenty of things to do nearby if you're not visiting hood river, and the hotel is close to groceries, food, and the Dalles main street. The main downside was the thin walls, so it was easy to hear neighbors, though quiet hours seem to encourage people to keep it down at night. Some rooms have a small kitchen, and there are designated pet rooms. The hotel asks you to call before arriving to arrange one. There's also an outdoor pool and a covered hot tub.

The hotel and restaurant staff were friendly, and the location and service were great. I especially liked the alarm clock on the nightstand, with two power outlets and two USB ports so I could charge all my devices at once. Why don't all hotels have one? The restaurant food was great too. If you stop in for breakfast or brunch, the marionberry waffle is a must, though I'd share it because it's huge.
