Red Roof Inn Toledo - University

The University Red Roof Inn was noisy, dirty, buggy, and felt unsafe. There was grime, mold from water damage, and roaches in the bathroom and under the fridge. Water leaked through the ceiling onto my belongings. When I complained, the large woman at the front desk said, “yeah, it leaks when someone in the room above doesn't put the shower curtain inside the shower.” The staff were dour and grim, not a smile in sight. Groups of drug users spent much of the week gathered outside my door, loud and obnoxious, and the balcony and room smelled of cannabis. Another guest blasted a sub-bass stereo from his truck for 20 minutes every hour, shaking the windows for days. No one seemed to mind those guests. I was told to leave three days early because the woman up front didn't like that I spoke up about the leak. I had two cats with me and had told the front desk at check-in they were support animals. She used them as a reason to kick me out, claiming I hadn't paid for the second cat, even though the website says support animals aren't charged. She told me, “If you are planning on keeping the cats, you have to leave...” and ten minutes later said, “you have to vacate the property tomorrow morning”. I had prepaid $200 for the room and wasn't refunded. The front desk clerk could apparently only find validation by harming an old lady and her two well-cared-for, well-behaved cats. Cowardly to target the weak, isn't it? I've stayed in hundreds of motels over my 87 years, and this was hands down the worst. The staff looked miserable, staring at the distant sky as if questioning how they ended up working there. If you like a thrill, the cops came several times, and there was an arrest right in front of the office, adding to the folksy slummy ambience. If you want a smelly, cruddy, noisy, buggy, unsafe room, this is the place. Otherwise, avoid it at all costs. It's a pit.

My family and I inspected the beds like we normally do when traveling. There were lots of dried blood stains from bed bugs, then we saw a big, juicy red one. The office moved us to another room and didn't sound surprised. We left for work, came back, checked the beds, and found another bug. I took videos and pictures. They tried to say I brought them. I asked for a refund, but the “Manager” guy said no and demanded proof, specifically a video. I said fine, I'd get one. When he saw I wasn't playing around, he became confrontational. He eventually refunded us. I wish it had gone differently. He seemed like a sweet kid doing his job, but he needed to take accountability. Mistakes happen, but don't be rude. I had to stand up for myself and my kids because bed bugs are serious and disgusting.

We were in an emergency and needed a place for the night. We got adjoining rooms, and both toilets were clogged. We got one sort of working, so I shared my bathroom through the night with my daughter and her husband next door. Probably our worst experience ever. In my 87 years, I don't think I've written a negative review before, but this location earned one. I feel bad for the staff because they're dealing with more than they can handle. I would've skipped this place if I'd read the reviews first.

David at the front desk was pleasant and patient. I didn't feel comfortable in the first room, so he offered an upgrade for an extra charge. The room next door was better, with a comfortable bed, a microwave, a small refrigerator, and more space. It was somewhat clean but could've been better, and the top bedspread had stains. There was also a mild smell when I first went in. Some people looked like they were homeless and staying there, but they were cool. For the price and location, it's a nice place to stay.
