Super 8 Tucson Downtown Convention Center

My room smelled like cigarettes, and there was a woman’s underwear hanging in the bathroom area, so I doubt the room was cleaned. The curtains were dirty, the drywall was all beat up, and there were some very sketchy people walking around. Run, don’t stay there. It’s not worth the price. If I could post pictures, I would. I definitely want my money back.

The room was clean, and the bed was okay, though it could have been firmer. At 7:58 a.m., a staff member knocked to ask if I was checking out. I was in the shower. It wasn’t a bad thing, but come on, at least give me until 9:00. Other than that, four out of five stars.

As women in our 70s, we didn’t feel safe staying here. The neighborhood looked “seedy” and sketchy, so we left and told the clerk we didn’t feel safe. She seemed surprised when we said we were there to check in. Then, apologetically, she explained that despite our reservation, we’d need to pay an additional $50 deposit, refundable after they inspected the room at checkout to make sure we hadn’t trashed it or used it for drugs and such. She said she understood why we left. Later I tried to get a refund, but the manager simply said, “The whole world is unsafe. That’s not a reason to leave.” It makes me think he does nothing to ensure guest safety. His attitude was that no place was safe, so you couldn’t expect or ask for safety. I’ve stayed at many Super 8 motels and NEVER felt unsafe.

We chose this hotel because it was a good location for our trip, though it wouldn’t be fair to compare it with others. I didn’t like the noise from vehicles passing by with music on while we were asleep, or people talking and sometimes yelling as they walked past. The establishment couldn’t control that, it was just rude people in the world now. Our key card didn’t work and we needed help several times, but staff always came to help. It seemed to be about knowing how to turn the handle and listen for the click that unlocks the door. I couldn’t get the feel for it, but the office people could. The other issue was the lady in the office on the second night. I understood the sign saying the lobby was closed and that we had to use the window. Another customer was already there, so I waited at a distance to give him privacy while he got a room. When she saw me, she waved me toward the window. I nodded to acknowledge her, but didn’t move while he was still there. She kept waving and looked annoyed. Ma’am, I was brought up with manners and to respect people’s place in line. I was only going to buy a soda, not because I couldn’t read. Patience is a virtue, and we won’t be staying here again.
