The front desk woman was unwelcoming when I asked for a late checkout, and only gave me 30 minutes. I also asked for latex gloves so I could tidy up after myself and make things easier for housekeeping. She refused outright and was condescending and rude the whole time. I didn’t feel welcome and wouldn’t stay again. I spent a couple of nights at WoodSpring Suites Tukwila and checked out Saturday, Feb. 28th. The room looked nice at first, but that was about it. There was no breakfast despite the lovely dining area, and no ice maker. The front desk isn’t staffed 24 hours like at other hotels I’ve stayed in, though someone will make themselves available for after-hours check-in and payment. It made me wonder about security, since it seemed like people could come and go without anyone securing the hotel or grounds.

The room hadn’t been cleaned well, with food crumbs left on the floor, though I’m not sure if housekeeping simply missed them. There was also a strong smell of smoke, maybe pot, near the entrance, and the elevator shook and made a scary noise before opening. I felt on edge about safety the whole stay, especially with my elderly mother and toddler. Three hours before check-in, while I was boarding my flight to Seattle, they called to say the family suite I’d booked weeks earlier on the website wasn’t available. They offered no alternative until I asked, since I had no time to book another place. They gave us a downgraded room and said the rate was lower, but charged me more. I’d told them I had an elderly person and a toddler with me, but the beds in the substitute room were so high my mother could barely get into one, and the toddler sank into the mattress. None of us slept comfortably. There was nobody at reception when I arrived. I rang the bell four or five times before someone came, then had to wait a long time. The website says coffee is available 24/7, but there was no coffee or cups. I can’t say I’d recommend this place.

I just wanted to heat my food, but the microwave circuit kept tripping the breaker, even after I unplugged the microwave. I told the front desk about the electrical short, and they dismissed my concerns as if I didn’t know what I was talking about. They didn’t update me, so I called an hour and a half after they’d come by. They said the team knew and would get to it tomorrow. When I pointed out that a breaker repeatedly tripping could be a fire hazard, all I got was, “I think you’ll be okay.” I’ve never felt so disrespected or had my concerns treated as completely invalid. I didn’t expect special treatment, but some courtesy would’ve been nice, even just an apology, an update, or some sympathy. I can’t recommend the hotel right now, though I wish I could. I truly hope this wasn’t because of unconscious bias or racism toward me as a disabled POC.

The hotel itself was fine for the price, and the room and everything else were fine too. But the towel policy was outrageous, so my rating would’ve been higher without it. There’s no housekeeping service, so you’re expected to take used towels to the front desk in a small black laundry basket to exchange them. When I went for fresh ones, the staff member had me sign a towel log, took the basket away, and inspected each towel. She came back with one still in it and said she wouldn’t accept it because it had “bodily fluids” on it, and I’d be charged $20. I was confused and embarrassed. Back in the room, I learned my husband had used it to clean up spilled chicken noodle soup. Nothing unsanitary or concerning, just ordinary life. I’ve stayed at lots of hotels, including extended-stay places, and never had to sign a towel log or have towels inspected like rental equipment. I’ve certainly never been charged $20 for a basic, inexpensive hotel towel.

The staff were pleasant, though they aren’t available around the clock. I didn’t need cleaning or other services during my stay, and it was comfortable overall. I was hesitant about the pet-friendly setup because there were a lot of pets on site, but it wasn’t an unpleasant experience at all. The room was nice and clean, and I loved having a kitchenette. I had to ask for towels and cookware, though I think that may just have been an occasional housekeeping oversight when the room was turned over.
