We stayed here before and had a great experience, so our kids were looking forward to Best Western's hot breakfast. This time, after we booked on August 12, we arrived to learn the property had become Inn at Joshua Tree, with no advance notice. Our one-bedroom King Suite wasn't available, and they downgraded our family of five to a King Bed room that couldn't fit us. We were told there was no vacancy and we could take it or find somewhere else. In hindsight, we might have been better off leaving. The place has changed since 2022 and looked run down, with renovations apparently underway. The pool was closed, the laundry room was dirty and its dryer didn't get hot, and the ice machine wasn't clean. Our second-floor hallway smelled like weed day and night. Breakfast was basic continental fare, cereal cups, oatmeal, bread, coffee, not the hot meal Best Western offers. The staff seemed stressed and unsure. They tried their best but couldn't answer questions about the room downgrade and rate change, so I called Best Western to sort out the difference. I had paid with points and cash, and the points were credited back. We won't stay here next time we visit Joshua Tree.
The front desk employee was really nice and checked me in quickly. The property could use an upgrade, but it was quiet enough for a good night's sleep, and I felt fine leaving my car in the lot. My whirlpool room had no issues, though the tub took a while to fill. It was nice to soak in after the long drive from Oregon. Breakfast could offer more. Not the best place, but not the worst either.
The staff were friendly and professional, and the shower had good water pressure. The rest was disappointing. The hotel looked dingy and rundown, with peeling paint, torn awnings, and a green pool that appeared out of service for a while, judging by the peeling concrete around it. We had a king room with a kitchenette. It could be a higher-end hotel if someone cleaned it up and maintained it. As it is, I expected much better. One star at best, with half a star for the water pressure.
I usually don't leave reviews, and I'm not a picky traveler, but this was one of my worst hotel stays. The place seemed deserted and under construction. Sand covered the road in, the lot was empty, and I wasn't even sure the road was proper. It felt unsettling in such a remote spot, especially since I seemed to be the only guest. My first room had a broken lock. They moved me upstairs, though the hotel seemed empty, and that room was dirty with broken A/C and a careless bathroom setup: two conditioners and no shampoo. When I raised the problems, staff didn't apologize or try to fix them. They essentially asked if I wanted to check out. Even at a low price, it wasn't worth it. I stayed at a similarly priced Hyatt on the same trip, and while it wasn't fancy, it was clean, safe, and functional. This place was none of those. Never again, and I strongly recommend others avoid it.
The staff were kind, professional, and happy to see us. That's the only thing I can praise. The room had ceiling damage, messy caulk repairs, a broken fridge, damaged walls, broken wall art, bubbled flooring, no bar stools, a nasty stove, and a sleeper sofa smaller than a full bed. Bathroom fixtures were broken too, and hot water took ten minutes. The breakfast room was 85-90 degrees, and the oatmeal packets were very old. The pool hasn't been available for 18 months to two years. The whole place is badly run down and looks likely to close soon. This was the dumpiest place I've stayed, and it is not three stars.
