Moxy Virginia Beach Oceanfront

This was my second stay at a Moxy, and I liked the change from the usual traditional hotel options I tend to book. It felt distinctive and memorable, and in some ways not like a typical hotel. I’d absolutely consider staying there again.

The Moxy Virginia Beach was a great fit for my husband, our dog, and me. We’re professionals in our mid-30s. I loved the fun, creative, social feel, and the lobby games and seating made it easy to relax and hang out. It’s clearly welcoming to dogs and kids. The Belvedere downstairs was a great breakfast spot, and the bar and lobby were lovely places to spend the evening. The hotel is very close to the beach and has an outdoor lounge where you can enjoy the ocean air. The room was small, but worked well for us. It was clean and thoughtfully designed, with a good-sized balcony. I liked the bathroom setup, with the large shower and toilet behind a sliding door and the sink in the main room, which made getting ready easier. There’s no regular dresser, but we hung clothes or used the chair, fridge top, and luggage rack. The narrow wall shelf worked well for keys, sunglasses, and toiletries, the “stash” closet was surprisingly useful, and the under-bed storage was handy for shoes and bags. The AC worked really well and the mattress was comfortable. The pillows were just okay, and the shower pressure was a bit weak, but neither affected the stay too much. The pool was closed for the season, though it looked nice, and housekeeping was excellent. It was my first time at a Moxy and I loved the concept. I’d happily take the smaller, minimalist room for the fun common spaces and social feel. I’d definitely stay here again.

The hotel was in a good location, nicely designed, and amusingly decorated, very much in keeping with the Moxy brand. My clean, comfortable room had the usual Moxy twist, a rocking chair and a hammock chair. It’d probably be more interesting on the beach side, but was still nice. Customer service was good. I didn’t run into any of the problems people mentioned. Complaints about the style or amenities seem to come from people who didn’t research the Moxy brand, so that’s not the hotel’s fault.

The staff were lovely, and I appreciated how much care they put into the details. The lobby is playful, the location is great, and it was nice to see dogs welcomed throughout. But the room was a real letdown, especially since the “upgrade” seemed to mean only a better view. There was nowhere to set our things except a wall-mounted folding desk. No place for a phone or bags, no closet, and just hooks along the wall. The tiny stool beside one side of the bed barely worked as a table because the large phone took up most of it. The sink sat right by the entrance, outside the bathroom and in the way. In the bathroom there were no surfaces or mirrors, and it wasn't functional. There wasn't a chair or couch either, just the bed. The heavy iron bathroom door was meant to slide shut but kept jamming. It was hard for two people to get ready or relax comfortably in there. I know hotel rooms keep getting squeezed smaller, but this setup wasn't good for two people.
