Esplendor by Wyndham Montevideo Cervantes

Our booking, made 9 months in advance, was cancelled without anyone contacting us, just a few weeks before we were due to travel. First we got a notification that our credit card was declined. We resubmitted it and it was accepted, then a few days later we were told it had been declined again. This happened with 4 seperate credit cards, all of which we’d used at other hotels around South America without any trouble. We tried several times to sort it out, but heard nothing. Then they cancelled the booking, leaving us without accommodation for our intended dates. You’d expect better customer service from a 4 star hotel. Disgusting!

At around 5 AM, sunrise flooded the room with light and made it impossible for us to sleep. The bathroom window had no curtains, and the glass panel in the door between the bathroom and bedroom couldn’t be covered. For a hotel in this category, that lack of light control is unacceptable. We complained and asked the hotel to fix the problem, but the manager refused to address it. We were very disappointed by the stay and by the lack of consideration for guests’ comfort. Unfortunately, we can’t recommend this hotel.

The staff were friendly and helpful. The rooms were clean and spacious, the location was decent, and the price was reasonable.

We were in Montevideo for just two nights, which was fortunate because the room was miserable. We don't mind staying in older buildings or small rooms, and we're not expecting luxury at the prices we pay. A clean room and a decent bed are enough. But this was far below that. The space was so narrow we couldn't roll a suitcase between the bed and the wall. My husband had to lift his case over the bed and climb across it each time. TV wires were hanging out and looked easy to pull. I'd already seen other complaints about the tiny rooms, poor upkeep, and cleanliness, so management has clearly heard about these problems. It's bad management to leave them unaddressed. I don't want empty apologies. Check the rooms and make sure they're cleaned to an acceptable standard before taking people's hard-earned money. I have never had to write a bad review before, since our stays have thankfully been more than satisfactory. Montevideo itself is a lovely city, but this hotel is not what it claims to be. I can't believe it advertises itself as four stars, and Bookings.com should check the facts before listing it that way. 😡😠
