The staff were kind, but the breakfast was bad, and I don’t think the place was worth what we paid.

The kitchen and terrace are spacious and comfortable, and the hostel is downtown Montevideo, near the main avenue and the waterfront promenade. I left as soon as I found somewhere else because the volunteer work was too much for a bed. The last straw was being handed a toothbrush to clean grout between the tiles.

The kitchen is only open until midnight, you can’t use the washing machine, there’s no water dispenser or coffee maker, nowhere to hang clothes, and the showers don’t have hot water. The whole place is a disaster. Claudia, one of the managers and a Uruguayan, was terrible to deal with. You can’t talk to her during business hours, and she gets annoyed by everything.

It’s cheap and well located, but I wouldn’t recommend it during peak season. During Carnival they put so many extra people in the common areas, with tents on the roof and mattresses in parts of the living room and kitchens, that the hostel was basically reduced to the rooms. Cleaning was neglected, and breakfast was really difficult with the place so overcrowded. Each room has at least six beds, including double and triple bunks. Some staff were excellent, others weren’t, and the stay wasn’t very comfortable.
