I liked the spacious courtyard as a place to sit, eat, or relax when it’s warm, and I enjoyed the decor. The bed was very soft, maybe memory foam. Some people might want more support, but after a really hard bed that was hurting my back, this felt therapeutic. I also liked the tea and the bathroom sink’s hot water, and the fridge was a good size for a hotel. Mario was very attentive to anything I needed. There was plenty that didn’t work for me. I stayed in room 4 at the very back. My room wasn’t ready, and after taking my payment, Mario checked whether it was clean. There was used soap on the shower floor. He gave me a damp towel and said the climate made it hard to dry things. By the second day, it smelled moldy. The bed wasn’t made, and I was handed sheets. There was no mattress cover. The door handle came off when I tried to close it, so I had to pull a crossbar on the window instead. There was a gap under the door letting in as much cold air as the heater put out. The draft stopper was too light to block it, so I used a dirty-looking, very damp rag instead. I understand it’s customary to use a rag for mopping the floor after a shower, but this one was unpleasant. The heater was set to 30C, yet after hours the room was only around 21C. The hot water tank held about 30 liters, so don’t count on a long shower to warm up when it’s cold. I found him on booking.com and messaged to ask if bringing my cat was okay, and whether he’d rather I book there or just contact him. He said messaging him was fine. I prefer supporting locals instead of paying commissions to companies like booking or uber. The price was among the lowest, 1400 pesos a night. I’d pay more for a better place next time I’m in Montevideo.
