Homestay Bai Huong

Leaving a night early cost us only the one night we actually stayed, which was kind of them. I can see how this simple, community-style homestay would suit some people, and other guests clearly had a great time. It just wasn’t the right fit for us. Getting there took some planning. Arranging speedboat tickets and transport without Vietnamese was challenging, and the homestay is on the island’s south side, so you need a motorbike ride. Agree on the fare beforehand and pay only that amount. The area itself has limited things to do: a few restaurants with similar menus and an open beach without chairs or umbrellas, very exposed in the June heat. We didn’t rent a motorbike because the terrain is so hilly, which also limited our activities. Tung was friendly and took us snorkeling, with all the gear provided. The sea life was enjoyable, though not spectacular. Fishing was available, but we didn’t try it. Our room was clean and had working air conditioning, though the power can go out. Ours stopped around 3 a.m. The mattress was very thin and uncomfortable for my back. The only window was boarded up, so the mosquito net was essential. We got bitten overnight. We can’t say for sure what caused it, but we took precautions and washed all our belongings afterward. The shared family bathroom was clean, but the plastic door latch kept coming apart or falling off. This is a basic, family-run place in a poor rural village, so it helps to set expectations accordingly. This is just our experience and may not be everyone’s.
