We left within four hours of checking in, just long enough to find another hotel. When we asked for a refund, the staff processed it straight away without questions or surprise, which says a lot. We paid another $300 AUD for a total of 3 nights elsewhere, and that hotel was beautiful, clean, and worth every cent. I wish we'd sorted Google reviews by lowest rating before booking. The negative ones were buried among lots of positive reviews that looked fake, and that would have saved us the hassle. The Sea Pearl Hotel in Cat Ba was nothing like its listing. Construction right beside it and across the road blocked the beachfront view, with cranes, dust, and constant noise. None of that had been mentioned when we booked, and the online photos and description were misleading. Inside, it smelled bad and looked old and poorly maintained. The pool was closed, and most common areas were shut, making the place feel abandoned, like a ghost hotel. Our electronic door lock barely worked, and it took five minutes to get into the room. At payment, they said something about the EFTPOS machine and that they preferred cash, which felt unprofessional for a hotel of its supposed standard. The listing also said motorbike rental was available, but reception just said “no” and sent us out to find one on the street. Avoid this place. It was a stressful stay and nothing like the photos.

My room had a pretty bad view, but the restaurant was nice and worked well for breakfast. The rooms were clean, the bathroom worked, and the minibar was unusually cheap for a hotel. It's also close to plenty of places to eat. I'd recommend it.

The bed was comfortable, the AC worked well, and breakfast was quite okay, with a good selection and eggs made to order. The decor, though, felt dated and somewhat neglected. Pool water quality was poor, and some of the planks around it were missing. Bathroom fixtures leaked onto the floor, the coffee machine was rolen, and the hotel felt deserted.

The rooftop pool and bar looked like something from a horror movie, and the service was horrible. The receptionist seemed to hate his job. I saw this listed as a 3 star hotel, but it should be a 1 star HOSTEL, definitely not a hotel. The bathtub was disgusting, the shower hose leaked, and hot water lasted 4 minutes. Only 1 outlet worked. They gave us a safe box without a keypad or any locking mechanism, and the room phone didn't work when we tried to call reception. When I asked to switch rooms, they said all the rooms were the same. Stay here if you're fine with cold water, can't charge anything, and don't mind rude service. Otherwise, don't. This was the worst hotel I've stayed at in Vietnam.

The one possible bright spot was breakfast. I wouldn't have picked this place myself, but it came through a tour we booked at Nexy, our hostel in Hanoi. The guide who picked us up from the hotel wasn't friendly either. His first words to us were, “I don't like tourist.” The island itself was beautiful, though that was about it. They said they'd upgraded us for my boyfriend's birthday, but our view was of a building, and we shared a wall with a service elevator and closet. It was super noisy. The bed was old and springy, with holes in the floor and stains on the wall. The shower barely drained, and after a few minutes it started to flood and smell like sewage. Dinner wasn't worth it, so we ended up eating store-bought cup noodles.
