We checked out two days before the end of our stay and found a much better place in the town center for less money. The room had severe problems throughout. Paint, lacquer, and plaster were peeling around the hotel and inside the room. Wires stuck out of the walls in several places, the toilet seat was broken, and the bath plug kept coming loose and exposed a sharp bolt. The quilt was badly stained underneath. There was no power to the hotel when we arrived. The freezer didn't freeze, the phone didn't work, and the earpiece was so quiet I couldn't hear the receptionist. The lift showed the wrong floor, and its buttons took us to different floors on different days. Wifi cut out every minute or two, with varying speeds, and was unusable. After several days of complaints, staff made empty promises about sending a technician. The pool was empty, green, and unusable. The sitting area around it was filthy too. Mosquitoes were a problem in the room, and mosquito coils in the halls left a lingering smell. The bed was so hard it felt like sleeping on the floor, and the pillows weren't adequate. There were no blackout curtains or other way to darken the room. Breakfast was unpalatable. The coffee couldn't be drunk, the orange juice tasted like it was made from powder, and the tea was weak and cheap. There was no toilet paper in the room. Staff were unhelpful and spoke very little English at best. Two days after check-in, someone knocked to ask what dates we were staying, as if staff couldn't check. Then, three days after check-in, the hotel demanded a damage deposit even though much of the room was already damaged. Housekeeping banged on the door around 9 to 9:30am. There were no do-not-disturb signs, so we made one ourselves in English and Vietnamese. It was also the first room I've stayed in where I needed a key to lock the door on my way out.

I haven't stayed at Kim Lien hotel, but I know it was built during Hanoi's "doi moi" period. The grounds have rooms, a pool, and large restaurant halls, and the place used to host big groups and events such as weddings and conferences. It's spacious and well located, but now feels worn out and hasn't been renovated.

The restaurant staff were good and professional. The housekeeping staff, about half of them, were very noisy. They talked loudly, shouted and walked around in the corridor nonstop, waking me up in the morning so I couldn't sleep or relax. Under the bed was very dirty, dusty, and full of trash.

The location was good, but there was no pool and my bed wasn't comfortable. Mosquitoes filled the room. I stayed one night, left the next day, and got bitten many times. I couldn't sleep well.

The hotel is old, with no recent renovation, and the room was small. It's centrally located and seems mainly for locals. The outdoor swimming pool opens in summer and is always full of kids taking swimming lessons.
