I spent nine nights here and found the staff consistently welcoming. They greeted me with a smile whenever we passed each other. The room wasn’t perfect, but it was clean enough and pretty decent for the price. At 550 baht a night, I think it was around 18-20 m2, bigger than rooms you usually get in the area. The bathroom was good, and they left two water bottles each day. Every morning the cleaning lady checked whether I wanted the room cleaned. She even offered to clean the bathroom, and she was sweet enough that I tipped her. Wi-Fi on the fourth floor was great, around 80-100 mbps. I can’t say how it is on the other floors. I moved to a different hotel after my nine-night booking ended, and its Wi-Fi was terrible, topping out at 12-15 mbps. I’d recommend going ahead with a booking here. P.S. I’m writing this out in detail for people like me who read lots of reviews before booking through platforms. 🤣

I’m sharing this for other solo travelers. I booked on Agoda without any pricing or relocation problems, and arrived January 11, 2026 at 9:30 PM. For what I paid, it was good enough; my main priorities were cleanliness, location, and budget. The place is easy to spot by the road, and there are food stalls and cafés nearby. The location is great. My room was cleaned every day, the shower had good pressure and both hot and cold water worked well, and the mini fridge worked. The hotel stays open through the night, though I believe you need to ring the doorbell. My room had no windows, which didn’t bother me, but you can choose one with windows if that matters to you. A few things made me uneasy. The AC cooled very slowly, so I used my ID card to keep it running while I was out. The extra door lock didn’t work, and as a solo female traveler I put some things by the door so I’d hear if it opened. The lobby was dim and didn’t feel very hotel-like, though I kept in mind this is a BUDGET hotel. They hadn’t told me they only accept cards for large amounts, and the nearest international ATM was an eight-minute walk away. At check-in, they asked for a security deposit, which I understand is normal for hotels. I’d planned to pay by credit card, but that wasn’t allowed. The receptionist asked to keep my passport. I calmly asked whether I could leave a different ID instead, and he agreed to take my Philippine License and photograph my passport. It wasn’t a huge issue, but it helped to stay calm and discuss options. Their English isn’t great, so speak slowly and be patient.

I’ve stayed at plenty of budget hotels in district 1, and this one is easily my favorite. I’ve even made friends here. Coming back to Sao mai hotel feels like coming home because the staff are so friendly when I talk to them. The cleaning lady often gives me a lovely smile when we pass, too.

The location made it easy to get around, with a pharmacy, 7-Eleven, and Cộng Cà Phê close by, and the fashion street only a few minutes on foot. My room stayed clean and tidy thanks to the housekeeper, and the night receptionist was wonderful. I had a great stay at Sao Mai Hotel and would definitely come back.

It’s small, but perfectly fine. The mini fridge is a nice extra, and the location is great, with an awesome coffee shop right next door.
