The rooms and hotel were good, but we came away feeling the owner was trying to get as much money out of us as possible. The water bottles in the rooms cost .50 $, with no sign telling us, and laundry was charged at 2$/kg, which is much more expensive than elsewhere. He also sold us what was described as an easy 3 hour trip to Love waterfalls for 25$, but it ended up being much shorter than we were told and felt overpriced. The worst part was the bus ticket he booked for us. He gave us no details except the departure time. We specifically asked him to reserve seats together on the sleeper bus, and he said he had. In the end, the five of us were scattered around the bus. Just not good.

I've been here many times, and there's plenty more I'll share on another visit. Taking the cable car and then walking part of the remaining route toward the summit was amazing. I didn't hike the “TO THE SUMMIT” route, but reaching the top made me feel small and changed my sense of how vast the world is. I've gone up three times to think through ideas for my CV, and came away with some good ones. That's probably not something many people try. The road from Lao Cai to Sapa is a treat, whether you're riding a motorbike or driving a car. You need to be the one driving to really enjoy it. The weather is amazing too, with biting cold like ice cream whatever the season. For that experience, winter is the time to go, and it's even more thrilling.
