Those sisters are genuinely kind, and we booked a bamboo walk through them that was a great way to see more of the landscape. It took about five hours over 8 km and cost 400,000 dong, with lunch, water, and a guide included. The homestay itself is beautiful, with a lovely view and a peaceful feel. My bed was on the floor behind a curtain near the landing, though, and the traditional Hmong house has very creaky, noisy floors. That does give you the real experience. There was also an incident involving one of their husbands. I hope the sisters can get the help and support they need. They’re lovely people and don’t deserve that treatment.

The rooms are simple, so don’t come expecting luxury. But it’s a friendly homestay where you meet people from all over, then sit down to a warm family dinner at the end of the day. We tried one of the guided treks offered by the house. At 28€ per person, it felt quite expensive compared with prices in general. Still, I’d recommend the place if you’re after a real mountain stay.

The hills around here are seriously stunning, and I felt relaxed as soon as I arrived. It’s a slow, peaceful place, good for unwinding and enjoying nature. There’s a walking track nearby, though you’re in the middle of nowhere and have to walk to find even a convenience store. Some local women may walk alongside you and try to sell things. My private room was basic, with a fan and power, and that was about it. The dorm looked like one big open floor with beds and mosquito nets, no walls. Bathrooms are outside the rooms, so you have to leave the building to use one. They were okay, and the showers had hot water. The Wi-Fi worked surprisingly well. Bring enough cash, since the counter takes cash only and there aren’t ATMs nearby. Getting there means walking up a steep driveway, so big suitcases could be awkward. In daylight it’s beautiful, but after dark the place felt a bit eerie and was almost completely black. For a rural, authentic Sapa feel and those incredible views, this felt like a homestay should.

The family dinner was delicious, breakfast was included, and food was available throughout the day. I had a great time at Hmong Sister and Zizi Homestay. Just keep in mind, as they make clear, the accommodation is basic and there’s no heating. The blankets are warm enough in bed, but outside of it you’ll feel cold during the day, so pack for chilly Sapa weather.

Zizi made the planning for my 2D1N Sapa trip really easy, and my local Hmong guides were fabulous on both treks, Fansipan on the first day and the rice terraces on the second. I only booked one night and wished I had more time to stay. When I missed my train to Sapa, she got me onto a sleeper bus within an hour, with a meetup spot and breakfast arranged for when I arrived. WhatsApp communication was smooth, and I felt so well looked after. The place is woman-owned, the view was lovely, my private room and attached bathroom were comfortable, and the staff were kind. The food was delicious too. Thanks to Hmong Sister House and Zizi Homestay for such a great experience.
