Khai Mai Hotel

Seafood here is expensive, about twice the price elsewhere. I wouldn’t recommend eating it here.

Blue sea beside green mountains, with lovely tropical scenery. It’s quiet and peaceful.

The host was friendly and the price was good. The rooms were clean and airy, and the food tasted great.

I visited in early July and came away disappointed. The hotel recommended a night squid fishing trip that cost 3 million VND, plus 400k VND for an electric vehicle ride to the boat. I came back with nothing. Locals told me squid season runs from March to June and was already over, and other hotels weren’t taking tours then either. We paid 600k per day for a room on the condition that we eat both lunch and dinner there. Meals were 250k per person, drinks not included, and the seafood portions were tiny. The clams and oysters were extremely small. Even the hotel said the fish in the mackerel-in-sauce dish probably wasn’t mackerel. The room had two double beds but was cramped, with barely enough space for one person to pass through. There was also a hole between our bathroom and the bathroom next door, so we could hear everything said there. The water was unpleasant too: after brushing my teeth, my mouth felt sticky, almost like plastic. They didn’t take guest feedback seriously. That was unlike the people of Quang Ninh I know.
